Arriving as a surprise addition to the 2026 MTG release calendar, The Zeta Set is a full Secret Lair set. Playing off the original Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited names while paying homage to the Gamma playtest cards, The Zeta Set is a blast from the past. Made in collaboration with MSCHF, this set is visually stunning, but it’s far from beloved.

The Zeta Set Release Date
The Zeta Set will be released on September 2nd, 2026, via the Secret Lair Chaos Vault. Specifically, the sale will begin at 12 p.m. ET, with pre-queue likely opening an hour beforehand. Even with the controversy surrounding it, it’s highly likely this set will sell out quickly, as it’s a limited-run sale.
The Zeta Set Details
Breaking from the long-established tradition, The Zeta Set will be sold in booster packs. Each pack is priced at $19.92 and contains seven randomized cards. These packs are comprised of 3 commons, 2 uncommons, 1 wildcard, and 1 rare or mythic card. Notably, customers are only able to buy 12 booster packs from the Chaos Vault.
Despite having rarities, The Zeta Set does not change the legality of any MTG cards. This is important, since Baleful Strix is being printed at common rarity, despite not already being legal in Pauper. Typially, this would make cards like Baleful Strix Pauper legal; however, MTG Designer Gavin Verhey has revealed this isn’t the case this time.
In total, The Zeta Set contains 121 cards as well as 17 bonus cards for a total of 138 reprints. Each of these cards also has three variants, dubbed Photocopy, Photocopy Negative, and Color Banding. Currently, the rarity of each of these variants has not been announced, and it’s unclear if it’ll be made public.
The Zeta Set Spoilers
Unlike the vast majority of MTG sets, The Zeta Set has not had a typical spoiler season. In fact, it seems Wizards of the Coast has revealed very little themselves, with MSCHF taking the lead instead. While this has made spoilers rather difficult to track, there have been some insanely expensive cards revealed so far.
Currently, the most expensive card in The Zeta Set is Chrome Mox, which sells for a whopping $150. Below this, Mana Echoes is worth around $56, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth sells for $54 on average. Notably, this is the raw reprint price of these cards, and the new variants could be significantly more, or less, expensive.

The Zeta Set Controversy
To say that MTG players are currently unhappy about The Zeta Set would be an understatement right now. At the very least, the price of the seven-card packs is absolutely wild, as they’re more expensive than Universes Beyond Collector Boosters on a price-per-card basis. As if this wasn’t bad enough, it’s physically impossible for a single customer to get every card in the set on their own.
Beyond these concerns, there are also major fears that The Zeta Set will dictate the future of Secret Lair and MTG. In an interview with Polygon, Secret Lair art director Jacob Covey revealed Wizards is watching the sale closely. From the sound of things, Wizards is open to making more booster pack-based Secret Lair products, “if people enjoy it.”
Currently, judging by the reaction online, MTG players certainly aren’t enjoying this set in concept. Given Secret Lair has almost always sold fixed drops of cards, the sudden shift to packs feels like pure FOMO exploitation. Hopefully, given how vocal players are being online, Wizards will know this isn’t something they want more of.
At the same time, the sale of The Zeta Set has not happened yet. As a limited-run product from Chaos Vault, there’s still an expectation this product will sell out incredibly quickly. If this happens, Wizards may take it as a glowing endorsement to go ahead and make more packs.

For better or worse, it seems there’s a lot hanging on the sale of The Zeta Set on September 2nd.
