Ultra Mysterious MTG Zeta Set Announced with $48 of Reprints

Share

Despite hopes for a nice, relaxing lull between The Hobbit and Reality Fracture, huge MTG announcements have surfaced today. Not only has a brand-new Superdrop just been revealed, but seemingly an entire set has popped up out of nowhere. Dubbed The Zeta Set, this MTG product has been teased by Scryfall, and it raises a lot more questions than it answers.

MTG The Zeta Set Reprints

Outside of the reveal on Scryfall’s homepage that The Zeta Set is a Secret Lair collaboration with MSCHF, we know next to nothing. So far, each of the seven revealed reprints has three unique treatments, and number crunching indicates it’ll contain a total of 121 unique reprints. Beyond this, there’s basically no information about this set and how it’ll be released, or how much it’ll cost.

Given the connection to Secret Lair, there’s a strong chance it’ll be sold there, or via Chaos Vault eventually. Equally, given MSCHF loves mischief, they may be handling sales and distribution when the time comes. For now, no release date has been explicitly confirmed, but Scryfall does list it as the 31st of December, 2026 on the set’s page.

As for the cards themselves, it appears that The Zeta Set contains some pretty pricy reprints right off the bat. Darksteel Monolith sells for around $25 at its cheapest, and Oboro, Palace in the Clouds is worth around $16. Windfall is also pretty decent at around $5, and with Secret Lair variants selling for double that, it could be surprisingly pricy.

Sadly, the raw reprint value falls off pretty fast after that, as Glimpse the Impossible, Unearth, Baleful Strix, and Serra Angel are all worth under $1. Notably, despite Serra Angel and Baleful Strix being listed as commons here, this set will not affect Pauper legality. The fact that this set has rarities at all, however, does suggest it could be far from a typical Secret Lair drop.

A Mystery Wrapped in an Enigma

Sadly, that’s about all we know about The Zeta Set right now, and we can only hope that changes soon. If this set is releasing in late December, however, we might be waiting a long, long while for answers. Thankfully, we won’t be bored in the meantime, at least, as we’ve got tons of Secret Lair drops releasing in the interim.
