From the moment that it was revealed, it was obvious that The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl was one of the most exciting Marvel Super Heroes Commanders. Beyond just being a fun Squirrel Token generator, this card is easily one of the best token generators in MTG. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that it hasn’t taken long for The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl to make a competitive debut, topping a Duel Commander event.
Flooding the Board with Squirrels

While it’s natural for casual Squirrel Girl decks to incorporate a Squirrel typal theme, the Duel Commander version features zero Squirrels. Instead, most of the creatures are mana dorks, increasing the likelihood that you can jam your Commander ahead of schedule. These dorks also make activating Squirrel Girl’s activated ability trivial, quickly flooding your board with tokens.
On their own, these tokens can be quite an aggressive or defensive force; however, they can easily go infinite with the right support. Alongside cards like Earthcraft or Enduring Vitality that can tap for mana, you can easily make infinite Squirrels. While you do need a Haste enabler, Concordant Crossroads, Shang-Chi, and Lightning Greaves filling this role, gives the deck surprising redundancy.
As if this isn’t enough to win, this deck can also leverage the infinite mana from the Squirrels for Walking Ballista and Finale of Devastation. While these alternative win conditions are powerful, this deck is somewhat risky. After all, it’s entirely dependent on your Commander, so protection pieces like Sylvan Safekeeper and Steely Resolve are vital.
On top of these format staples, this deck also leverages Frenzied Baloth to skirt counterspells. Similarly, to deal with cards like Dranith Magistrate, both Bridgeworks Battle and Legolas’s Quick Reflexes are in the 99. While this does give the deck decent resilience, sadly, it’s hardly a sure thing in Duel Commander.
All Or Nothing
Realistically, this The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl deck requiring its Commander so much makes it rather volatile. While it can be very consistent, since you basically just have to play your Commander, it’s equally an easy target. With this in mind, this deck and Commander may struggle to compete in larger tournaments.
As much as this might be somewhat disappointing, clearly The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl can compete in local events. Potentially, it could be a great build to try your luck at Duel Commander, especially if you’ve already got a casual deck built around Squirrel Girl.
