MTG's Best Monster From Bizarre Format Sees 633% Price Increase!

Many MTG players may be shocked to hear that Terravore saw a price spike over the last few weeks. This creature seems entirely unplayable, even in formats like Commander, so why is the card suddenly spiking in price? We wouldn’t blame you if you were unsure why Terravore saw a price spike. Most players don’t keep track of the format where it just took down the Italian World Championships. It turns out Terravore is an absolute monster in the Premodern format.

Terravore in Premodern

  • Mana Value: 1GG
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Stats: */*
  • MTG Sets: Odyssey, Dominaria Remastered
  • Card Text: Trample. Terravore’s power and toughness are equal to the number of land cards in all graveyards.

Similar to its Typal brother Tarmogoyf, Terravore’s power and toughness scales with the state of player’s graveyards. In this case, Terravore becomes larger the more lands that are there. Considering that the winning decklist in Premodern was a land destruction one based on Wasteland and Armageddon, Terravore’s price spike may begin to make a bit more sense. Terravore can easily swing for lethal damage after a few Crop Rotations, Wastelands, and an Armageddon.

Premodern is an MTG format that contains a card pool of everything released before the Modern format became legal but after 1994. In other words, cards released between 1995 and 2003 are legal in the format. Promo and Portal cards are excluded from this list.

Like any format, Premodern has a banlist. Considering the era of cards this format contains, this is not at all surprising. As much as you may want to try your Tolarian Academy in a deck, it is understandably not legal in Premodern. You can find the Premodern banlist here.

Either way, thanks to Terravore’s dominant performance at the Italian Premodern championships, the card has seen a smaller spike in price. Once worth just $1.50, Terravore can easily demand a price around $10-12 now, for its Odyssey variant, at least. If you just want a copy of this card and care less about the old border, the Dominaria Remastered variant of the card is worth less than a dollar.

As many MTG players know, old foils can be worth quite a lot. Terravore is no exception. It’s not uncommon to pay north of $50 for an Odyssey foil Terravore. That said, the spike does not seem to have affected foil prices all that much. These were always expensive.

All in all, Terravore’s price spike seems to largely, if not completely, be based on its dominant performance in Premodern recently. Notably, Opalasence, another card to see a price spike recently, also has a strong presence in the Premodern format. While that card has other obvious avenues that can lead to increased interest, it’s worth making a note of this.

Fortunately, if you’re just looking to find Terravore on the cheap, there are still ways to do that. If you want the original printing of Magic’s land-based Lhurgoyf, however, it’ll cost a bit extra.
