Tarkir: Dragonstorm is Magic’s latest Standard-legal tentpole set. Scheduled for a full release on April 11, there isn’t much time left before Magic’s various formats get entirely taken over by Dragons from Tarkir. Considering this, it shouldn’t be surprising that the spoiler season for Tarkir: Dragonstorm kicks off on March 18, just two weeks from now. Despite this, we’ll get a ton of information on the set next week.
Continuous Tarkir: Dragonstorm story releases aside, MTG Designer Mark Rosewater just announced when his set teasers will drop for the set. These don’t show off any new cards, but they do give a list of details about the most interesting aspects of the cards in Tarkir: Dragonstorm.
Mark Rosewater Set Teasers
They aren’t as prolific as card spoilers, but MTG Designer Mark Rosewater releases a series of teasers for each upcoming MTG set on his Blogatog. Generally, these teasers offer wacky details that appear on cards for the next set. These generally include splashy effects, wacky creature types, and other oddities that can get players excited. These traditionally release before the spoiler season for an MTG set begins.
As an example of something that may pop up in these teasers, during Streets of New Capenna, one of Rosewater’s teasers announced a new 15-mana creature was being released in the set. Creatures with a mana value this high rarely appear in any MTG set, and are generally very powerful. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is one of the most powerful creatures in all of Magic, and has a mana value of 15.
The card was eventually revealed as Shadow of Mortality, an interesting twist on Rosewater’s teaser. It’s a 15-mana creature, but the intent behind playing this card is to reduce its casting cost in proportion with your life loss, offering a similar effect to Death’s Shadow in a different way.
Occasionally, teasers for Commander products releasing alongside a set also appear. MTG designer Gavin Verhey creates these and commonly posts them on the Good Morning Magic YouTube channel. At this time, there has been no confirmation that Tarkir: Dragonstorm will have Commander teasers.
Players generally have a lot of fun trying to align Rosewater’s teasers with cards during the spoiler season, so many look forward to these wacky teasers from Rosewater’s Blogatog. As such, players are already asking for a teaser date, and Rosewater has given one.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm Teaser Date
Answering a recent question about the teaser release date on Blogatog, Mark Rosewater has confirmed that Teasers will drop on Tuesday, March 11, exactly one week before the spoiler season for Tarkir: Dragonstorm begins.
These teasers won’t include hints for cards that we’ve already seen. Mox Jasper and Stormscale Scion certainly offer some incredibly flashy hints to provide, but there isn’t really a point in teasing cards that the playerbase already knows.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm’s first look at Magic Con Chicago has set a compelling precedent for the set. Everything from a new Mox to an insane lifedrain removal spell has been announced. After the incredibly impressive cards were revealed, expectations for Tarkir: Dragonstorm are very high. Expect many players to analyze these teasers with bated breath.
If you want to make sure that you don’t miss Mark Rosewater’s teasers for Tarkir: Dragonstorm, we’ll be sure to discuss them when they drop here. These teasers generally give leading hints that can become massive clues with a bit more context – something we strive to provide.
With all the crazy designs already released for Tarkir: Dragonstorm, it’s tough to imagine how Rosewater’s Teasers will compare. Will Nicol Bolas and Ugin return? Will we get a ridiculously powerful one-mana Dragon? All will be revealed soon, and it starts with Mark Rosewater’s Tarkir: Dragonstorm teasers.
