This week has been surprisingly packed in terms of MTG content, with hype for The Hobbit Prerelease being dulled somewhat by other announcements. As if the full Mystery Booster: Commander Edition set reveal wasn’t enough, we also got the decklist for the Hatsune Miku Secret Lair precon. Adding further to the pile, today saw the full reveal of the Star Trek Welcome decks, featuring several noteworthy spoilers from the set.
MTG Star Trek Welcome Deck Spoilers
Dominion Saboteur is the clear highlight from today’s reveals, now one of the best Clone effects we now have access to for Commander. While five mana is steep, this can copy both artifacts and creatures, and it even skirts the legend rule. This lets you double your Commander or powerhouse artifacts like The One Ring, while still retaining counters for additional synergies.
Speaking of future Commander staples, Support Mission looks like a slam-dunk for the format, too, as an interesting option for go-wide token decks like Baylen, the Haymaker. Additionally, it works as a slick combo enabler alongside Persist creatures like Lesser Masticore and a sacrifice outlet. Though we’ve seen similar effects before, being a Mono-Green enchantment makes this much more flexible and resilient than the competition.
While these new spoilers are oddly-timed, it’s still great to get a deeper look at Star Trek, even if it’s with relatively simple cards like these. If the quality of the full set’s uncommons keeps up with the standard set by these three, we’re in for a treat when it lands in November.
