MTG Event Offers Four Cases Of Controversial Cards As Special Prize

Get ready to really broaden your Horizons...

While it’s too early to tell for sure, so far the MTG Spotlight Series seems to be a success. The Foundations edition of the event drew in over 1400 players: the kind of numbers we haven’t seen for a Standard event in some time. Just being a big, open event was likely the cause for most of that success, though the sweet participation promo and massive six-case bonus prize certainly helped. Today, the bonus prize for the next event in the series, MTG Spotlight Series: Modern, was revealed.

While certainly in the same vein as the prize for Foundations, this one draws not from Standard sets of the future but Modern sets of the past. Two of the most infamous sets of all time, in fact. If you were on the fence about rocking up in Utrecht come March, perhaps this will sway your decision.

Bonus Prize Revealed For MTG Spotlight Series: Modern

MTG Spotlight Series Modern Prize

The bonus prize for MTG Spotlight Series: Modern was revealed in an official post from event organizer Fanfinity. As with Spotlight: Foundations, this prize will only be given to the overall first-place winner of the event. The prize in question? Two cases of Modern Horizons 2 Draft Boosters, and two cases of Modern Horizons 3 Play Boosters.

That’s four cases total, which is less than what the winner of Spotlight: Foundations got. For those who’ve forgotten, the bonus prize for that event was one case of each Standard set for 2025, which works out as six cases in total. That said, while the quantity is lower here, the quality is much, much higher.

Granted, we don’t know how good any of the 2025 Standard sets will be yet. They could all be barnstormers. It’s hard to imagine them topping Modern Horizons 2 and 3, however. These sets were so powerful that they essentially rotated the Modern format upon release. These are two of the most controversial MTG sets of all time, with a sizable portion of the audience considering them mistakes. In other words, you’ll get plenty of value from two cases of each.

In terms of pure financial value, the prize is worth around $5,600. That’s a very nice chunk indeed, particularly when paired with the $10,000 in cash for first place. There’s been a lot of talk about the lackluster prize support at big MTG events lately. While not a full fix, this is a good step towards addressing that.

With this bonus prize now revealed, Spotlight Series: Modern is looking all the more enticing. Be sure to check out Fanfinity’s event page for the full details, including dates, locations, and more.
