MTG X Spongebob Secret Lair Announced

No, this is not a joke. This is Patrick.

Today, A new MTG Crossover between Secret Lair and Spongebob Squarepants was officially announced. Appearing as a tweet on the official MTG Secret Lair Twitter page, people are quickly losing their minds.

MTG X Spongebob Secret Lair

An MTG X Spongebob crossover seems like a strange one. Despite this, this announcement is as official as it gets. Sometime in 2025, MTG players will probably be able to play Spongebob as a Commander.

Upon this reveal being made official, many MTG players believed that this was a prank. While the Fortnite Secret Lair that happened some time ago has some similarities in nature, this is an IP that many MTG players never expected to see in the game’s crossover era.

Regardless, many players are hoping to scream MY LEG, in jovial agony in their upcoming Commander games.

A Secret Lair crossover with a wacky icon like Spongebob really sets a new bar for what potential crossovers we could see in the future. At a time, something like Secret Lair X Shrek may have seemed a little too unrealistic. Now, it’s completely in the realm of possibility.

Players have not been shy about pushing their dream Secret Lairs after Spongebob was revealed to the masses. MTG X Jimmy Neutron and MTG X Avatar: The Last Airbender are some commonly requested ones.

Of these, Avatar: The Last Airbender seems incredibly realistic. Avatar and Spongebob are both Nickelodeon IPs, so the possibility of seeing Aang is quite high. The overall more serious atmosphere of Avatar is also something that may have a more natural fit into Magic than the secret Krabby Patty Formula.

Honestly, there are a ton of iconic Spongebob moments they could make into cards. MY LEG could easily be some sort of incredible removal spell. I would personally enjoy a Duress that’s just Squidward playing his clarinet.

This Secret Lair is definitely going to have its fans. If it succeeds, expect more Saturday morning cartoon nostalgia-fuelled Secret Lairs to come on their way.

Also, for anyone that’s expecting MTG X Spongebob to be Standard legal, that seems unlikely. It only appears that the Universes Beyond core sets, like MTG X Spider Man, will be Standard legal.
