MTG Spider-Man Sees $200 Spike Before Set Even Releases

Share

Collector Boosters have been a really hot commodity lately. The chase for the Golden Chocobo has set Final Fantasy Collectors sky high. Players are now paying over $1100 for a box, more than twice the box’s MSRP. Sadly, this doesn’t appear to be the only Collector Booster box skyrocketing in price.

MTG X Spider-Man’s spoiler season hasn’t even begun, and boxes are already beginning to rocket to the moon. We haven’t even seen any cards from the main set yet, and these boxes have far surpassed their MSRP.

MTG Spider-Man Collector Booster Boxes

We don’t know much about MTG Spider-Man. To date, release date aside, we really only know what cards will be available in the Spider-Man Scene bundle. Honestly, none of these cards were particularly impressive, either.

Considering that Spider-Man’s first foray into MTG was a mediocre one, it’s surprising to see MTG Spider-Man Collector Booster boxes jump this aggressively so far ahead of release day. MSRP for a Collector Booster pack, according to an official article from Wizards of the Coast, only amounts to about $37.99. That’s a lot for a pack of cards, adding up to about $456 for a full Collector Booster Box.

As you may have guessed, Spider-Man Collector Booster Boxes are going for a little more than that. At the time of writing, the market average for these boxes is $748, which accurately reflects recent sales. This price follows a massive and somewhat unexpected price spike.

The Spike

Over the past month, MTG’s Spider-Man Collector Booster jumped from a stable $550 to a shocking $750. A $200 spike certainly seems confusing, but there is a slight jump in demand for the product as it began to spike.

Generally, only a few of these sell daily, but right as this price jump started, between 10-30 boxes were selling daily, with 29 being the outlier on June 16th. If you’re a frequent reader of our finance content, you may notice that these numbers are really low compared to spiking cards. It’s important to note that these boxes are only really available for preorder, so there are very few boxes that players can even claim for release day at this point. At the time of writing, only 6 listings are available on TCGplayer.

Alarmingly, these numbers suggest that MTG Marvel Collector Boosters will be even more expensive than Final Fantasy ones were on release day. Those boxes were only worth about $710 on prerelease weekend, and about $690 before that. Boxes then spiked significantly afterwards, likely as a response to the perceived value of the Golden Chocobo cards.

Because the increase in volume is so minimal, it’s best to take these prices with a grain of salt. If demand ceases, these boxes could drop back in price. That said, Final Fantasy has set a disturbing precedent for Universes Beyond Collector Booster boxes and, as a result, this spike isn’t entirely unexpected.

The Whole Story Hasn’t Yet Been Told

While the writing seems to be on the wall for Spider-Man’s Collector Booster pricing, there’s a few key things that haven’t happened yet. The biggest of which? We have no idea what cards are in this set.

Sure, we can assume that all of Spider-Man’s biggest names will make an appearance, but we have no idea what they do and, more importantly, how rare they are. Part of the appeal of the MTG Final Fantasy Collector Booster boxes is chasing the Golden Chocobo, which is, almost literally, a Golden Ticket. These are selling for $50,000+ on the secondary market. For many, that’s a life-changing amount of money, at least in the short term, and a rather exciting prospect to chase.

We technically don’t have a guarantee that there will be a Spider-Man collectible that’s quite as sought-after as the Golden Chocobo. It would be shocking if there weren’t, but Edge of Eternities doesn’t seem to have any serialized cards. Sothera, the Supervoid, while getting a scarce printing, does not have that printing limited by number.

A mediocre reveal could cause these Collector Boosters to tank back down. That said, Wizards of the Coast generally takes the utmost care with their Universes Beyond crossovers, so we would be surprised if this happens. Ultimately, it’s impossible to truly predict the future, but if the Spider-Man Collector Boosters follow recent trends, it will be the most expensive Collector Boosters yet.
