MTG Instant Speed Equipment Attach Support Card Sees 262% Price Increase

Share

Equipment Matters Commander decks have seen a lot of support in Final Fantasy. Weapons are a big part of the franchise, and Wizards of the Coast was sure to capitalize on that fact. In addition to multiple incredible equipment in the main set, Limit Break, the most expensive Final Fantasy Commander precon, is centered around the weapons matter theme.

With all of this support, lots of MTG players are interested in building equipment decks. For that reason, equipment support is increasing in price across the board. When it comes to equipment essentials, Sigarda’s Aid is tough to beat. Whether you want it as an upgrade to Limit Break or as yet another card for a new equipment deck, Sigarda’s Aid is getting extremely expensive.

Sigarda’s Aid

When it comes to equipment support, Sigarda’s Aid is the best of the best. For the low cost of one white mana, all of your equipment will immediately attach to your creatures on entry. You can even use them as combat tricks since Sigarda’s Aid grants them Flash.

This will seriously speed up the effectiveness of your equipment deck. Instead of spending time equipping your creature, they can just enter play attached to something. This saves tons of mana and gets rid of one of the biggest downsides to equipment overall. Any Commander deck using equipment in white will want this card, including Limit Break.

Sigarda’s Aid is perhaps most renowned for its combination with Colossus Hammer. That one-mana equipment gives a massive +10/+10 buff, but at the cost of a huge equip cost. Sigarda’s Aid bypasses that completely. This strategy is so powerful that it sees Modern play.

On that note, Hammertime in Modern is on the upswing, which could be impacting this price as well, but likely on a much smaller scale. A majority of Sigarda’s Aid’s interest is undeniably due to Commander trends caused by Final Fantasy.

The Spike

Sigarda’s Aid has been spiking from $6.63 since mid-May, but the card really started catching steam once Final Fantasy started hitting shelves. A massive spike in demand can be seen in mid-June, where approximately 20 copies were sold per day.

Now, the card’s cheapest available copies are worth about $21 for the Commander Masters variant, but some sales are even higher. Notably, this printing does not have a foil version since it was in a Commander precon.

The spike for the traditional Eldritch Moon variant is even more extreme. This copy of Sigarda’s Aid spiked from $5.80 to about $21 in the same period of time as the other spike. Foils have a small premium at $25, but haven’t been selling too frequently. At the time of writing, these are the cheapest available copies of Sigarda’s Aid.

If you’re looking to spend a little more, there are two Secret Lair variants of Sigarda’s Aid. The cheaper of the two comes from the Captain America Secret Lair. Reskinned as Captain America’s Aid, this card goes for about $25, up from $7 at the beginning of June, for its nonfoil variant. Foils go for between $28-$30, up from $8 during the same time period.

The most expensive Sigarda’s Aid on the market is the Bonus Card from the Secret Lair Angels Commander deck. That goes for about $85 in near mint condition, but can be significantly cheaper in Lightly Played.

Another Final Fantasy Trend

The bulk of Sigarda’s Aid’s spike is undeniably due to Final Fantasy. That means that this spike will likely, eventually, fall back down as Commander trends move on to Edge of Eternities. From what we’ve seen so far, it doesn’t appear that equipment will be a major theme in that set.

That said, we don’t expect Sigarda’s Aid to fall back to its recent low. Not only is equipment a heavily supported Commander archetype at the moment, but Hammertime is starting to become trendy. For that reason, Sigarda’s Aid is likely to experience a moderate level of demand for some time, especially if it doesn’t receive a heavily accessible reprint.

Sigarda’s Aid isn’t the only piece of equipment support that’s spiking in price, but it is one of the best. If you’re trying to optimize your equipment deck, we’d recommend picking one of these up. That said, if you’re looking to make your money go further, I’d wait to pick this up until Edge of Eternities releases. Trends will likely shift by that point, and Sigarda’s Aid may drop in price slightly. All of that said, it is impossible to truly predict the future.
