This is, by far, one of the strangest MTG announcements we’ve seen in some time. Considering that April Fools is just a day away, this might be a joke, but regardless, it gives MTG players something interesting to speculate upon.
MTG Secret Lair is known for trialing many wacky off-the-wall MTG products that may not appear elsewhere. The Chaos Vault, in particular, hosts incredibly bizarre products for MTG players to try. If the concepts are sound, players will vote with their wallets. Despite competing Cat and Dog Secret Lairs, and five separate basic land drops, however, Secret Lair’s latest announcement may be the strangest.
A redacted Secret Lair has been confirmed. The trouble with a redacted announcement is… it’s redacted. Regardless, let’s break down what we know so far.
Secret Lair: Redacted

Secret Lair is █████████ █ █████████ █████ ███ █████ cooked ████ ████ ████. While this single line makes the entire announcement worthwhile, there is still a little information we can glean about this upcoming lair. Specifically, the lair offers five cards. Apparently, something in the Secret Lair is adorable, so I would expect some sort of cat or dog to appear. It also appears that two or more treatments will be available for the lair. One of which will likely be foil.
The drop may also be available through non-traditional methods in addition to the usual Secret Lair sale site. The last line suggests that some copies of this Secret Lair will be available at stores – likely Local Game Stores. Non-foil Secret Lairs have recently been made available at LGSs to try and help offset the limited supply issue.
It’s difficult to discern more than that, since a vast majority of this announcement is redacted at the time of writing. Players eager for more information about this Secret Lair can look forward to something happening in April.
Community Speculation
While there isn’t a lot of information available, there is more than enough for players to start speculating about what it all means. The leading guess is that this Secret Lair is literally a redacted one. An MTG social media trend from recent times highlighted sharpie cards. The idea is to redact text on the cards to create new, wacky and, usually, broken effects.
While a normal Secret Lair for this wouldn’t be printed in 1000 years, for April Fools Day, it seems like a plausible guess.
Otherwise, some players are guessing that this Secret Lair may remain a secret until players start opening it for themselves. Personally, if this happens, I would expect this Secret Lair to sell out incredibly fast. The amount of FOMO that may be generated by a completely random product could be off the charts. Wizards of the Coast could do some cool stuff with this, as well. While five cards are offered, they could be from a much larger pool of cards. As long as they are new cards, and there are some genuinely interesting things to find, players may love it.
This Will Likely Be Revealed Soon
Secret Lair announcements haven’t historically remained a secret for a very long time. The announcement also mentions April in its text. While we don’t know what this means for 100% certainty, we would speculate that this Secret Lair is either being revealed or sold within the month.
As for what the Secret Lair is, only time will tell what this bizarre product has in store. At the end of the day, it might just be a relatively normal Secret Lair once everything is revealed.
