, Dragons have been an integral part of the game as a whole. This remains true even today, with the type being spotlighted in the new Reign of Dragons Foundations Commander deck. Right out of the box this is a solid list, featuring many of the best Dragons in the game and some strong synergies. With the following upgrades, however, Reign of Dragons can become an MTG deck capable of taking down bracket 3 pods with ease.

Going Deeper on Dragons

MTG Reign of Dragons Upgrades Dragon Synergy

The first port of call when upgrading Reign of Dragons is to cut some of the less powerful Dragons in the list, and replace them with better alternatives. Cards like Tyrant’s Familiar Tyrant’s Familiar Tyrant’s Familiar Flying, haste
Lieutenant — As long as you control your commander, this creature gets +2/+2 and has "Whenever this creature attacks, it deals 7 damage to target creature defending player controls."
and Terror of Mount Velus Terror of Mount Velus Terror of Mount Velus Flying
Double strike (This creature deals both first-strike and regular combat damage.)
When this creature enters, creatures you control gain double strike until end of turn.
are too slow to have much impact on games, so they’re easy cuts. Some of the lower-cost Dragons here, like Taurean Mauler Taurean Mauler Taurean Mauler Changeling (This card is every creature type.)
Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.
and Rapacious Dragon Rapacious Dragon Rapacious Dragon Flying
When this creature enters, create two Treasure tokens. (They're artifacts with "{T}, Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.")
, are better in terms of speed but offer very little synergy for you to work with.

Take these cards out, and you’re free to add in some of the best Dragons Wizards has ever printed. Both Terror of the Peaks Terror of the Peaks Terror of the Peaks Flying
Spells your opponents cast that target this creature cost an additional 3 life to cast.
Whenever another creature you control enters, this creature deals damage equal to that creature's power to any target.
and Twinflame Tyrant Twinflame Tyrant Twinflame Tyrant Flying
If a source you control would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls, it deals double that damage instead.

When it's defeated, exile it, then cast it transformed.)

and Desolation of Smaug Desolation of Smaug Desolation of Smaug Desolation of Smaug deals 3 damage to each non-Dragon creature.
Add four mana in any combination of colors. Spend this mana only to cast Dragon spells.
, and you have a stellar support suite for your main threat package.

To make room for these extra support pieces, you can get rid of some of the many, many board wipes that Reign of Dragons has by default.
