It’s a new year for Magic, and while many things remain the same, there are certainly some changes. The biggest one, in the opinion of many, is the major influx of Universes Beyond crossovers. Now, half of Magic’s tentpole sets will be taking place somewhere outside of the Multiverse we’ve grown so used to. Fortunately, for many, these foreign lands will also be incredibly familiar.
For players who want to see their favorite Final Fantasy characters at the highest levels of Magic gameplay, today’s announcement will be a particular treat. MTG’s first important competitive events of 2025 have been officially announced.
Pro Tour Final Fantasy, and More
An announcement from magic.gg, the official MTG site that deals with competitive-related announcements, has just revealed information about a suite of upcoming events. While Pro Tour Final Fantasy is definitely the highlight, it’s not the first major competitive event on 2025’s calendar.
Pro Tour Aetherdrift is scheduled for the weekend of February 21st at MagicCon: Chicago. This will be the first major competitive MTG event and the first major MagicCon of the year. The qualification season for this particular Pro Tour has already finished. Notably, this Pro Tour is just a week after the official release of Aetherdrift.
Pro Tour Final Fantasy similarly takes place a week after the release of 2025’s first tentpole MTG set on the weekend of June 20th. The current Regional Championship season for the Modern format qualifies for Pro Tour Final Fantasy. This event will occur at MagicCon: Las Vagas.
Finally, September 26th – 28th marks the weekend of Pro Tour Edge of Eternities. The current Regional Championship Qualifier season qualifies for Regional Championships that, in turn, qualify you for the Edge of Eternities Pro Tour. This event takes place in Atlanta alongside the MagicCon happening there.
Otherwise, Regional Championships for Australia, New Zealand, South America, and Brazil were also announced. You can find more information regarding those Regional Championships here.

One particularly exciting thing about the current schedule for upcoming MTG Pro Tour events is that they are scheduled close to the release of the namesake set. This gives Magic’s best players the opportunity to break out in uncertain metagames. New decks can crown winners, and watching the best players in the world draft new sets can give enthusiasts great ideas. This should, ultimately, make these events a lot more exciting for spectators. An entirely new strategy just makes a Pro Tour event that much more memorable. The breakout of Vampires at Pro Tour Murders at Karlov Manor is a great example.
Pro Tour Final Fantasy could take things even further in that regard. Imagine a new Cloud or Lightning deck breaking out at the top tables, or even taking down a Pro Tour! This would be absolute cinema for Final Fantasy fans, but could also start a different kind of discussion among MTG purists. In either case, this would allow a Pro Tour event to have an even bigger impact on Magic: the Gathering.
This was something that many MTG fans were asking for. It’s not only more exciting for spectators, but for players, as well. While competitive minds may like preparing for an expected metagame, it’s always more fun to take a swing at being the name that broke a new format.
It may just be the beginning, but 2025’s biggest competitive MTG events look great for fans.
