Technically, the MTG Spider Man set isn’t even out yet. It might be legal, following prerelease events starting last Friday, but it doesn’t officially launch until tomorrow. Due to this, we’re technically still in a pre-sale period, but prices are stabilizing fairly quickly. This is thanks to players getting their first proper hands of feel of the set.
Now that the Spider Man cards can actually be played with, we’ve seen a range of price movements across the board. Curiously, a lot of these are to the bonus sheet reprints, which had a brief stint of being surprisingly cheap. Now, however, it seems the main set cards are catching up, with Peter Parker leading the way.
Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man
Following their reveal as one of the first Spider Man MTG cards, Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man is fairly old news at this point. While he’s not the five-color Commander juggernaut of Cosmic Spider-Man, he’s still easily one of the set’s best Commanders. In particular, he’s a fantastic choice for a Spider Man-focused deck, but he’s got plenty of utility outside of that.
Once flipped into, or played as, Amazing Spider-Man, this card becomes a real monster. In a multicolored-legends-focused deck, this card can cheat out en masse. While Web Slinging does require you to return a tapped creature, it’s easy enough to work around this. Notably, the Station cards and lands from Edge of Eternities offer a great way to tap down creatures while gaining additional benefits.
According to EDHREC, Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man is currently the 5th most popular Commander from MTG Spider Man. While this is already pretty impressive, he’s also a staple within Cosmic Spider-Man lists as well. Thanks to this, there’s a decent amount of demand for Peter Parker, especially at the moment.
For better or worse, while Commander demand is driving the market at the moment, competitively Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man is a bit of a dud. Compared to other four mana threats, this card simply doesn’t do enough. Unless it manages to enable a Web-Slinging deck in Standard somehow, it likely won’t cut the mustard.
The Spike
Despite not being a Standard all-star, there’s still more than enough Commander demand to go around. Thanks to this, Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man has seen a pretty sizable price spike recently. Notably, this has only happened in the past week, as the overall monthly price history looks pretty grim.
While initial listings suggested Peter Parker would cost $60, prices quickly fell as soon as actual sales took place. By early September, the price had fallen to just $19, and it kept plummeting until it hit rock bottom last week. Just before prerelease events for MTG Spider Man started, Peter Parker was worth just $3.16.
Since then, it didn’t take long for Peter Parker to bounce back, hitting a post-prerelease peak of $12.49. Prices have slipped slightly since then, as the current price for new listings sits at $10.58, including shipping. This marks a 234% price spike in just one week, which is definitely impressive, but the future is uncertain.
Presale Prices
Right now, Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man is technically still only available for presale on TCGplayer. This is thanks to the fact that the set technically hasn’t been released yet, but that all changes tomorrow. Once the MTG Spider Man set is actually released, all bets regarding pricing are off.
In theory, the official release could cause a new wave of demand as casual players look to purchase this compelling Commander option. That said, it seems far more likely that there will be a dramatic increase in supply that outstrips this demand. If this does happen as expected, the price of Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man is likely to crash significantly.
Notably, as much as there is a good deal of Commander demand, and decks according to EDHREC, the card isn’t a staple. While it’s still early days, the comparisons with past Universes Beyond sets don’t look great. Sephiroth, Planet’s Heir leads a similar number of Commander decks, yet he’s only $0.72 on TCGplayer.
With this in mind, I wouldn’t be too optimistic about the future of Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man. Even if play numbers do increase in the future, this card’s niche appeal within the wider Commander format will limit its potential. Ultimately, as always, we’ll just have to see what happens, but don’t be surprised if this spike doesn’t last long.
