Despite The Hobbit officially releasing just a few weeks ago, Wizards of the Coast is already moving on to their next set, Reality Fracture. While spoiler season for the set begins next week, the story begins today, wrapping up a massive MTG story arc. Within the first chapter, a new Reality Fracture card has been spoiled, with potential in a few specific strategies.
MTG Perfected Theory
Offering a simple but somewhat powerful combat trick, some MTG players are excited to try Perfected Theory in Prowess strategies. Turning your Monastery Swiftspear into a 5/6, or your Slickshot Show-Off into a 6/5 with one spell can truly pile on damage in Standard. While this card’s explosive potential makes it an interesting option, there may be better cards already available.
Standard Prowess already has Secret Identity, which offers much better defensive capabilities than Perfected Theory. By giving your creatures Hexproof, Secret Identity allows your Prowess creatures to dodge removal. Despite the raw damage potential being a bit worse, the raw upside of Secret Identity is far higher than Perfected Theory. That said, the ability to turn opposing creatures into 1/1s can help deal with massive blockers in decks like Mono-Green Landfall.
Outside of Standard, Perfected Theory can do some ridiculous things with Vivi Ornitier in Commander, granting you four mana by buffing Vivi’s stats. The card can similarly buff Vadrik, Astral Archmage up, giving you a ridiculous cost reduction of four on your instants and sorceries. Throw in the card’s use as a sneaky piece of removal during any player’s combat, and Perfected Theory should be a powerful choice for specific strategies.
Sadly, as exciting as Perfected Theory looks, it’s more than likely that this card will end up simply being a niche Commander option and a powerful Limited combat trick. Still, as far as MTG story spoilers go, this one is reasonably powerful and may become a niche tech option at future tables.
