Despite being rather expensive, Secret Lair Commander precons are some of the most beloved products in MTG. Historically, these precons have all sold out exceptionally quickly, so much so that Wizards had to step in and change things. For the recent Hatsune Miku precon, Wizards brought back print-to-demand, allowing players to avoid disappointment.
Thanks to this recent, hopefully permanent, change, hype for new Secret Lair Commander precons has only increased. Thanks to this, when the packaging for a new deck, named “Odds and Ends,” appeared online, players were understandably excited. Following this, the entire decklist has now been leaked, and it doesn’t disappoint at all.
MTG Odds and Ends Precon Leaked
Due to some especially early leaks, we’ve actually known about the Odds and Ends precon for some time. The face Commander of Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign, and the deck’s overall theme, for instance, were revealed in December of last year. Following this, a bunch of stellar reprints from the deck were revealed early, making it look like another heavy hitter, value-wise.
Now that the full decklist has been revealed, we can see that the rest of the 99 doesn’t disappoint. That being said, the four cards with new artwork from Ricardo Cavolo that we hadn’t seen before aren’t all financially impressive. The only card that is, Breach the Multiverse, sells for just $10, too, so it’s not on the same level as Esper Sentinel and company.
Notably, while it only has around $1.50 of raw reprint value, the new Swords to Plowshares could be quite lucrative, too. As a huge Commander staple, Secret Lair printings of this can sell for $20 and beyond when it hits right. In theory, this new reprint could sell for a similar price point, but that’ll depend on its distribution method.
Sadly, for value enthusiasts, the last two reprints with new art each sell for little over a dollar. Out of these, Weathered Wayfarer has the most potential, as it’s a fairly useful, but well-reprinted, ramp engine. On the other hand, Perplexing Chimera is just a somewhat unusual interaction piece that’s never been particularly expensive.
Thankfully, while the newly revealed Secret Lair reprints aren’t amazing, many of the previously revealed cards are far better. Not only is the aforementioned Esper Sentinel worth around $58, but Sensei’s Divining Top is $41, and Void Winnower goes for at least $18. As if this wasn’t enough value, the regular reprints in the 99 also pack some excitingly heavy hits.
A Value Positive Precon
While it is a bit of an odd addition to the Odds and Ends precon, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth is a stellar reprint. Selling for at least $16, this land is a true staple, appearing in over 838,000 Commander decks. Similarly, while it’s not as much of a staple, Toxrill, the Corrosive is also rather expensive, going for $15.
Dropping down in price slightly, both Venser’s Journal and Smuggler’s Share sell for around $9.50 on average. With these cards offering highly useful staple effects for Commander, it’s great to see these cards reprinted. Similarly, while it’s not as widely played, the $8 Aboleth Spawn has been dying for a reprint.
Curiously, to seemingly lean into the rather odd nature of the Odds and Ends precon, it also includes some Unfinity reprints. While Exchange of Words and Space Beleren aren’t the most expensive cards, at $1 and $0.50 respectively, they’re both positively charming.
All in all, the Odds and Ends Secret Liar Commander precon has pretty impressive reprint value, though it’s not the best we’ve seen. Worth around $300 in total, this deck should break even from just its heavy hitters alone. That, however, does depend on how much this deck sells for, which is currently unconfirmed.
Big Unknowns
Sadly, even while we’ve seen the decklist, the critical information, like release date, price, and availability, is all unknown. Technically, we can presume that it’ll cost $150, like the Hatsune Miku precon, but even that is a guess. Similarly, we can also hope that print-to-demand will return to continue that experiment, but that’s not guaranteed either.
Frustratingly, since there’s no word about a release date, either, there’s no telling when we’ll hear more about this deck. Hopefully, Wizards will push up any reveals now that the deck has been fully leaked, but that’s not guaranteed. Ultimately, all we can do is wait and see what happens, but I certainly wouldn’t hold your breath.
