A couple of years ago, Wizards of the Coast brought Universes Beyond to Standard to streamline simplicity. While Commander decks still existed, this seemed like a great boon for new players, even if it caused problems. Today, however, Wizards has just announced a baffling change that makes legality more confusing than ever before.
Mystery Booster Commander Edition Legality Change
During the latest WeeklyMTG livestream, Blake Rasmussen revealed that the legality of Mystery Booster: Commander Edition is being changed. Now, when the set is launched officially at MagicCon: Atlanta on November 13th, 2026, it’ll be legal only in Commander. Other Eternal formats, including Legacy, Pauper, and Vintage, will have to wait until January 1st, 2027, for the set to become legal there.
According to Rasmussen, this change was made due to supply concerns, since the set’s distribution method isn’t exactly normal. During 2026, Mystery Booster: Commander Edition will only be available for purchase at MagicCon: Atlanta, and its accompanying Festival in a Box. While this has caused some real supply concerns, the actual problem isn’t the set selling out, but rather delivery times.
On December 8th, European Eternal Weekend events will kick off in Lucca, Italy. Prior to the legality change, players attending these events would only have three weeks to pick up needed cards. With deliveries taking time and the market ripe for manipulation, it makes sense to put off the legality briefly.
With this context in mind, it makes sense that early reactions on social media are fairly positive. It’s clearly not ideal that Wizards is having to do this, but brewing and buying cards around major events is always troublesome. Looking ahead, we can only hope that Wizards can plan release dates so this never has to happen again.
