Bizarre Octopus Wins Commander Event by Cheating Massive Creatures into Play

With access to MTG’s entire card pool, cEDH decks use the same pool of cheap, overpowered cards. While this makes the barrier of entry for the format extremely high, these patterns also create a few weaknesses to exploit. Thanks to cEDH’s low mana curve, for example, Marvo, Deep Operative has successfully taken down a smaller cEDH event.

Marvo, Deep Operative

Marvo, Deep Operative’s Clash mechanic easily lets you cheat game-warping creatures, like Hullbreaker Horror and Nezahal, Primal Tide into play with ease. Black’s top-of-deck tutor options, like Vampiric Tutor, can help set your Clash up, while Lantern of Insight ensures that you can win it. A wide array of tutors even lets you play some offbeat options, like Toxrill, the Corrosive, to beat up other rogue decks.

Once your massive creatures are in play, there’s lots of ways to convert that into a win. Marvo can use copy effects, like Clever Impersonator or Phyrexian Metamorph, to create a deadly board state, for example. Alternatively, Hullbreaker Horror can set up infinite mana combos with Sol Ring and Mox Opal, while Retraction Helix and Valley Floodcaller can do something similar.

Because Marvo is Dimir, you also get to run some of the most broken cards in cEDH, including the Demonic Consultation and Thassa’s Oracle combo. Blue also opens up Mirrormade, Copy Enchantment, and Rhystic Study for Marvo, allowing him to join in on the Rhystic copy meta. Throw in some powerful interaction like Amphibian Downpour and Talion, the Kindly Lord that can be tutored up, and Marvo seems like a real contender.

Uniqueness as a Strength and Weakness

Overall, Marvo, Deep Operative offers an incredible tempo piece that takes advantage of common cEDH play patterns. Since he doesn’t use the graveyard much, for example, Marvo can run Grafdiggar’s Cage to stop Underworld Breach decks. Similarly, Cursed Totem can stop creature toolbox decks in their tracks, while your uncounterable Clash payoffs punish Vexing Bauble.

Of course, there are reasons that Marvo hasn’t been more popular in cEDH, the biggest of which is the Commander’s mana cost. This both means that you’ll need to fight through multiple opposing win attempts, and hate pieces like Drannith Magistrate will be a common sight. Despite this, Marvo does seem well positioned, offering some unique lines that take advantage of the meta as well as the format’s best cards.
