With so much Final Fantasy hype dominating the Magic: The Gathering news cycle, it’s easy to forget that we’re only a few short months away from our first Marvel tie-in set. Spider-Man is set to launch on September 26th, taking us perhaps as far as we’ve been yet from Magic’s traditional fantasy roots. Before that day comes, however, we could see another interesting collaboration between the two brands. Just yesterday, a Marvel action figure leak revealed the possibility of an MTG crossover.
This is a real ‘worlds collide’ moment for the Magic and action figure fanbases. It’s also, potentially, a sign of a really interesting new product on the horizon. We’ve seen Secret Lairs that mirror our favorite toys, but what about Secret Lairs that come packaged with them? It’s very much possible based on the information in the leak. While this should all be taken with a pinch of salt, as is always the way for leaks, the timing with regards to Spider-Man launching soon certainly makes a lot of sense.
The MTG Marvel Action Figure Leak
The MTG Marvel action figure leak comes to us via SpicyPsyDuck. They made a post on X yesterday noting that a list of action figures from season three of the Marvel Legends line was leaked from a Chinese source, which SpicyPsyDuck then obtained. The original list itself wasn’t provided in the thread, but action figure YouTubers like Displaying Model Behaviour have vouched for SpicyPsyDuck’s reliability as a leak source.
What was provided in the thread was an English translation of the list’s contents. X1243, another member of the action figure community, broke it down across a number of posts. All in all around 37 new figures were covered by the leak, from a range of different franchises. The interesting part from our perspective is that four of them came with the prefix ‘Magic: The Gathering’ attached.
The figures in question are Doctor Doom 2099, Invisible Woman, Black Panther, and Captain America. As mainstream Marvel picks, all four make total sense right now. Avengers: Doomsday is bringing both Doctor Doom and the Fantastic Four back into the fray, and the other two are just solid Marvel staples at this point. The other two are also, interestingly enough, characters that have already received Secret Lair drops in the past.
Other than the names of the figures, the only other real information provided in the leak was the planned release date. According to SpicyPsyDuck, this is set for Q4 2026. That’s a long way away, but it’s worth keeping in mind that Magic’s Marvel collaboration is a multi-year, multi-set endeavor. It’s very much possible that another MTG x Marvel product could drop in Q4 next year.
What Does It Mean?!
At this point, you’ve probably got a question or two ready to go. The nature of this collaboration is totally unknown right now, and could play out in any number of ways. The Magic: The Gathering prefix on the figures pretty much guarantees some kind of crossover, should the leak be real, which gives us room to speculate.
Perhaps the most obvious guess, and one that several players online have already made, is that these will be figures that come packaged with corresponding Magic cards. These could be individual cards or even whole Secret Lair drops. Secret Lair is all about pushing boundaries, and this would be a hugely flavorful way to do so. Marvel has done something similar recently with its 85th anniversary figures, too, so it’s totally within the realm of possibility.
Alternatively, Marvel could be creating figures based on hero designs used in the upcoming Magic sets. This seems less likely than the above, and is less exciting, but it’s still very possible. As we saw in Lord of the Rings, Wizards is capable of radically reimagining Universes Beyond character designs in some situations. If it does the same for Marvel, figures representing those designs could be very interesting to collectors.
Whatever the true meaning of this MTG Marvel action figure leak is, it looks like we’ll be getting something in the back half of next year. It’ll probably be something very popular, too. The Magic and action figure communities are notoriously fond of collectibles on their own. When the two come together, all bets are off.
