Insane New Reality Fracture Legend Creates Infinite Black Lotus Combos

Share

After Secrets of Strixhaven, seeing a card that creates a piece of the Power Nine surprisingly isn’t that groundbreaking. Still, when Mark Rosewater teased a card in Reality Fracture that creates tokens identical to Black Lotus, players were excited. Even with the expectation of safety nets, it’s not every day that Wizards pushes the boat out this much.

Now that it has been officially revealed, Kwia Vigorbloom is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, it’s got one hell of a stat line and an ability suite that can definitely create shenanigans. On the other hand, this card is six mana, and it has a pesky once-per-turn limit holding it back. Thankfully, in Commander, you can break these limits.

Kwia Vigorbloom | Card

Even on its own, while expensive, Kwia Vigorbloom is a solid threat. Thanks to having evasion in Flying and Lifelink, too, it can easily generate a Black Lotus token each turn. Hell, thanks to having Vigilance and solid stats, you could even use it as a blocker for up to four Lotus per turn cycle without any other help.

At the very least, this raw power should let Kwia easily pay for itself and then some. Realistically, though, you’re rarely playing your Commander on its lonesome, especially when it costs six mana. Thankfully, there’s tons of support to make Kwia go the distance and trigger as much as possible.

Since they don’t care about whose creatures are entering, classics like Essence Warden Essence Warden Essence Warden Whenever another creature enters, you gain 1 life. and Soul Warden Soul Warden Soul Warden Whenever another creature enters, you gain 1 life. are easy auto includes. Similarly, cards like Authority of the Consuls Authority of the Consuls Authority of the Consuls Creatures your opponents control enter tapped.
Whenever a creature an opponent controls enters, you gain 1 life.
specifically work on your opponent’s turns for extra redundancy. Speaking of which, there are tons of cheap Soul Sisters cards like these, and you’ll want to include a bunch to guarantee token creation.

When it comes to creating tokens, too, you’ll want tons of token doublers like Doubling Season Doubling Season Doubling Season If an effect would create one or more tokens under your control, it creates twice that many of those tokens instead.
If an effect would put one or more counters on a permanent you control, it puts twice that many of those counters on that permanent instead.
. On top of this format staple, Ocelot Pride Ocelot Pride Ocelot Pride First strike, lifelink
Ascend (If you control ten or more permanents, you get the city's blessing for the rest of the game.)
At the beginning of your end step, if you gained life this turn, create a 1/1 white Cat creature token. Then if you have the city's blessing, for each token you control that entered this turn, create a token that's a copy of it.
, Mondrak, Glory Dominus Mondrak, Glory Dominus Mondrak, Glory Dominus If one or more tokens would be created under your control, twice that many of those tokens are created instead.
{1}{W/P}{W/P}, Sacrifice two other artifacts and/or creatures: Put an indestructible counter on Mondrak. ({W/P} can be paid with either {W} or 2 life.)
, and Exalted Sunborn Exalted Sunborn Exalted Sunborn Flying, lifelink
If one or more tokens would be created under your control, twice that many of those tokens are created instead.
Warp {1}{W} (You may cast this card from your hand for its warp cost. Exile this creature at the beginning of the next end step, then you may cast it from exile on a later turn.)
turn things up to 11. Ideally, this should give you an obscene amount of mana, opening up high-end plays like Craterhoof Behemoth Craterhoof Behemoth Craterhoof Behemoth Haste
When this creature enters, creatures you control gain trample and get +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of creatures you control.
and Grand Crescendo Grand Crescendo Grand Crescendo Create X 1/1 green and white Citizen creature tokens. Creatures you control gain indestructible until end of turn. .

Before you get to this point, Kwia Vigorbloom can play a strong mid-game too, thanks to cards like Ajani’s Pridemate Ajani’s Pridemate Ajani’s Pridemate Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature. . Alongside lifegain staples like Archangel of Thune Archangel of Thune Archangel of Thune Flying
Lifelink (Damage dealt by this creature also causes you to gain that much life.)
Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.
, Exemplar of Light Exemplar of Light Exemplar of Light Flying
Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.
Whenever you put one or more +1/+1 counters on this creature, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.
, and Heliod, Sun-Crowned Heliod, Sun-Crowned Heliod, Sun-Crowned Indestructible
As long as your devotion to white is less than five, Heliod isn't a creature.
Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature or enchantment you control.
{1}{W}: Another target creature gains lifelink until end of turn.
, this deck’s core is undeniably potent. You can even run Aetherflux Reservoir Aetherflux Reservoir Aetherflux Reservoir Whenever you cast a spell, you gain 1 life for each spell you've cast this turn.
Pay 50 life: This artifact deals 50 damage to any target.
to capitalize on the life gain and knock opponents out.

Infinite Black Lotus Tokens

Kwia Vigorbloom | Combo

As much as Kwia Vigorbloom is capable of playing a very strong and interesting fair game, this legend is absolutely breakable. Thanks to Flicker cards like Emiel the Blessed Emiel the Blessed Emiel the Blessed {3}: Exile another target creature you control, then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control.
Whenever another creature you control enters, you may pay {G/W}. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on it. If it's a Unicorn, put two +1/+1 counters on it instead. ({G/W} can be paid with either {G} or {W}.)
, you can get around that pesky once-per-turn restriction on token creation. With Kwia, Emiel, and any Soul Sisters card, in fact, you can easily make infinite tokens.

Since each Black Lotus token is just enough to pay for an Emiel the Blessed activation, you can consistently flicker Kwia Vigorbloom. When it enters again, the Soul Sisters card will trigger, netting you a Black Lotus for you to use on Emiel again. Sadly, this combo won’t win you the game on its own, but it will net you infinite life and enters triggers.

Exploiting either of these, Aetherflux Reservoir Aetherflux Reservoir Aetherflux Reservoir Whenever you cast a spell, you gain 1 life for each spell you've cast this turn.
Pay 50 life: This artifact deals 50 damage to any target.
threatens to end the game, while any token doubler gives you infinite mana. In theory, you could then add Walking Ballista Walking Ballista Walking Ballista This creature enters with X +1/+1 counters on it.
{4}: Put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.
Remove a +1/+1 counter from this creature: It deals 1 damage to any target.
for a wincon, but that’s realistically a five-card combo.

Fun but Flawed

Sadly, for as fun as Kwia Vigorbloom can be, it’s in a very awkward position. Because it’s so expensive and kind of do-nothing on its own, you’ll want to spend early turns setting up support. While this does let Kwia land with a bang, if you can’t spend time ramping, you’re not exactly fast.

With this in mind, it feels like Kwia Vigorbloom might end up being a party piece that doesn’t pop off in most games. Since bracket three should end around turn six, your only option is to power up Kwia early. If you manage this, there’s plenty of fun that can be had, but realistically, this might be for lower brackets.

Still, since Kwia Vigorbloom can be a lot of fun, you might be very tempted to pick it up upon release. If you can help it, though, it might be better to wait a week or two after October 2nd. With pre-sale prices already sky-high at $50, there’s definitely an early Black Lotus tax that’s hype driven.

Hopefully, once Reality Fracture and Kwia Vigorbloom are actually released, demand for this card will plummet. Whether or not this will actually happen, however, technically remains to be seen, even if it is highly likely.
