MTG Jumpstart Rabbit Approaches $40

Preston, the Vanisher started showing up on MTG finance fans’ radars last week, but the card hasn’t stopped climbing in price. This disappearing rabbit has some absurd synergies with Hare Apparent. Of all the cards in MTG Foundations, Hare Apparent is affecting the Commander secondary market the most.

Thrumming Stone is a massive example of this. The card is now pushing $20, thanks to increased demand. Before Hare Apparent was released to the world, Thrumming Stone was only a $6-7 card. This is one of the best cards in the game for decks that use cards with no deck limit. The connection between Thrumming Stone and Hare Apparent is clear. Now, it’s Preston’s turn.

Preston, the Vanisher

Preston, the Vanisher, and Hare Apparent are the perfect partners in crime. Hare Apparent does its best work when entering the battlefield, and if you’re flickering your rabbit, Preston makes a copy of it. This doubles the ETB triggers from Hare Apparent, and scales the number of Hare Apparent in play.

With a few flickering spells, this quickly gets out of hand. It’s not challenging to overwhelm your opponent when the amount of tokens Hare Apparent can make. Each flicker creates an extra Hare Apparent, and two Hare Apparent get to enter play.

While Hare Apparent only creates rabbits equal to the number of Hare Apparent you control, there’s a lot of room to run powerful typal engines that reward having a ton of rabbits. Preston, the Vanisher will benefit from those as well since it is also a rabbit. Effects like the new Banner of Kinship can easily make your army of tiny rabbits into monsters, trampling over your opponents with ease.

The Spike

Over the last month, Preston the Vanisher’s secondary market average on TCGplayer has risen from $10ish to $28.82. Despite this, Preston the Vanisher has recently experienced a series of sales that push the card closer to the $40 range.

Over the last few days, Preston the Vanisher has multiple sales for between $37 and $38. This is likely due to an influx of TCG Direct purchases since, as of this article’s writing, some cheaper copies of Preston are available on TCGplayer.

Despite this, finding a copy of Preston for less than $30 certainly appears to be challenging. They are floating about but difficult to pin down. Add to this the fact that Preston does appear to be continually rising in price, and it may not be long before the card breaks $40.

Unlike many other MTG cards, only one variant of Preston, the Vanisher exists. Because this card’s sole printing is in Jumpstart 2022, foil copies of Preston don’t even exist. While an extended art variant of a rising card commonly exists that’s lagged behind, there’s no case of that for Preston. The base, nonfoil variant is the only version of the card you can find.

So, if you’re after Preston, the Vanisher for your flicker EDH deck, regardless of whether you’re playing Hare Apparent or not, you’ll have to pay a premium.
