MTG Star Trek Enchantment to Receive Minor Day Zero Errata

Share

Considering the size and scope of Magic: The Gathering nowadays, Wizards of the Coast runs a pretty tight ship. Each year we’re getting thousands of new cards with unique mechanics and interactions, yet the game is mostly still stable. While this is a very impressive feat, sadly, there are times when problems slip through the cracks and need to be dealt with.

For better or worse, it appears that MTG Star Trek has one of these problems that needs to be fixed with a day zero errata. Admittedly, this won’t be the biggest change in MTG, but it could still catch you out if you’re not careful.

MTG Hit It! Errata

Hit It!

Recently, on Bluesky, Matt Tebak, Wizards’ Principal Game Experience Designer, pointed out a minor problem with Hit It! Once this enchantment enters, the cards you see won’t initially be revealed; however, seeing them is inevitable. Since everything but one land will hit the graveyard, and that land goes onto the battlefield, everything will end up being revealed anyway.

Essentially, this meant your opponent would need to go rifling through your graveyard to stay in the know. While you can do this, it’s a bit needlessly messy, so Wizards is changing things with updated oracle text. Now, when MTG Star Trek is released, Hit It! will force you to reveal five cards from the top of your deck.

Notably, as Tebak stated in a follow-up post, you’re not able to avoid putting a land onto the battlefield with Hit It! So long as you find one when revealing the five cards, it must go onto the battlefield. The only way you’d be able to choose a land is if you find multiple; then you can pick between them. By

Ultimately, while this is a functional day zero errata, admittedly, it’s a pretty small one in the grand scheme of MTG. Even if you play the card as written when Star Trek prerelease events start, it won’t be a massive misstep. Still, playing this card with the errata in mind is definitely the right way to do things.
