New Marvel Enchantment Creates Game-Ending Life Gain Combos

Share

During spoiler season for MTG sets, it’s natural for players to look towards exciting combos enabled by the new cards. While many of the combo pieces players discover require too much setup to be competitive, a select few end up defining formats.

For Marvel Super Heroes, Heroic Feast might be that gem due to its Modern combo potential. Setting up infinite life and infinite damage kills with it isn’t difficult, giving plenty of deckbuilding potential.

Heroic Feast as a Combo Piece

Thanks to its second triggered ability, Heroic Feast is the perfect card to pair with Spike Feeder. Just like Heliod, Sun-Crowned, each time you remove a +1/+1 counter from Spike Feeder to gain life, Heroic Feast can put a +1/+1 counter right back on it. This sets you up to gain infinite life in a similar manner, adding some nice redundancy to Modern Selesnya Life Gain Combo.

Where Heroic Feast gets its edge, however, is its ability to spread out multiple counters off Spike Feeder activations, making lethal damage trivial. Add Walking Ballista into the mix, and you’re ready to deal infinite damage without even entering combat.

Notably, in addition to its combo with Spike Feeder, Heroic Feast also makes a bunch of three-card combos possible. Alongside Basking Broodscale and Guide of Souls, for instance, you’re set up to gain infinite life, counters, as well as enter and death triggers. Giving the combo some redundancy, Herd Baloth or Scurry Oak can replace Basking Broodscale here, while Soul Sisters effects can do the same with Guide of Souls.

Despite its potential, however, Heroic Feast is far from perfect. Since the card is an enchantment, it doesn’t synergize perfectly with common lifegain inclusions, like Eldamari’s Call and Collected Company. While cards like Malevolent Rumble still work with the enchantment, its inability to do much on its own is also a reason for concern.

That said, even if Heroic Feast ultimately falls short in Modern, the enchantment still has Commander potential. Legends like Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn and Blech, Loafing Pest that blend life gain and counters themes together should make great homes for this card. As a Food token producer, Heroic Feast also pairs nicely with Sam, Loyal Attendant, Peregrin Took, and other thematic payoffs.

With Modern and Commander potential, there’s no question that Heroic Feast has some power behind it. It’ll be interesting to see where this enchantment ends up.
