Duskmourn: House of Horror is shaping up to be a very intriguing MTG set. Not only is the theme a bold new direction for MTG, but the mechanics are equally as interesting. Enchantments and Demons are two major themes in the set which is great news for Commander players. It’s potentially not such good news for the wallets of those players, however.
As interest in Duskmourn: House of Horror builds, there’s been a lot of interest in potential price spikes. Thanks to the themes of the set, enchantress cards and demon support have huge potential looking forward. If you ask the MTG community, these cards are about to seriously skyrocket in price as more and more of Duskmourn gets revealed.
Opalescence
- Mana Value: 2WW
- Rarity: Rare
- Card Type: Enchantment
- MTG Sets: Urza’s Destiny
- Card Text: Each other global enchantment is a creature with power and toughness each equal to its converted mana cost. It’s still an enchantment.
Opalescence is already beginning to see a price spike, and many players attribute this to Duskmourn’s heavy enchantment theme. This four-mana reserved list enchantment can turn all of your enchantments into a massive army. Thanks to the introduction of Room enchantments, the Eerie mechanic, and even Enchantment lands, it really appears that Opalescence decks will see a resurgence.
Before constructed players begin buying copies of Opalescence, Commander players are primarily the ones caring about this spike. Enchantress strategies do see some fringe Legacy play, but Opalescence is not a card commonly found in those decks.
Regardless, while we are beginning to see price spikes for this card, players can still find copies for about $10. If you think you want to build a deck with this card utilizing new Duskmourn cards, we recommend buying this ASAP.
Replenish, And Other Cards That Do the Same Thing
- Mana Value: 3W
- Rarity: Rare
- Card Type: Sorcery
- MTG Set: Urza’s Destiny
- Card Text: Return all enchantment cards from your graveyard to play.
A personal guesstimation, Replenish is one of the premier Enchantress cards for Commander. It also happens to be on the Reserved List. Bringing back your entire graveyard’s worth of enchantments for just four mana is a rate that you cannot beat. As long as you don’t get Farewelled, your enchantments are safe in the grave if you have this card.
Now, if you want to use Replenish, but cannot afford it, there are other cards that do this, but for much more expensive mana values. Brilliant Restoration, Triumphant Reckoning, Open the Vaults, and Resurgent Belief are some cheaper examples that accomplish the same thing as Replenish. All of these cards are more difficult to cast than the Reserved List one, and Open the Vaults returns everyone’s cards back to play. Replenish’s cost could be a barrier to entry for some players, so if this enchantress effect becomes popular, we could see cheaper copies of the effect spike instead.
This enchantment theme can go a bit further. Serra’s Sanctum, the de-facto Reserved List card for Enchantress decks, could also see a price spike thanks to Duskmourn demand. That said, this card is so expensive that it could dodge a spike because it is outside of most player’s budgets.
An interesting diamond in the rough for players looking to build Eerie enchantress decks is Cleansing Meditation. As long as you have Threshold, the card basically flickers all of your enchantments while destroying all of your opponent’s. This is only a dollar at the time of writing, but it could easily go up as Duskmourn sees more spoilers.
Herald of Slaanesh
- Mana Value: 2R
- Rarity: Uncommon
- Stats: 2/2
- MTG Sets: Warhammer 40K
- Card Text: Locus of Slaanesh – Demon spells you cast cost (2) less to cast. Other Demons you control have haste.
We’re already beginning to see a bit of Demon support in Duskmourn. Besides Valgavoth itself, a new Demonic Tutor variant has appeared that truly demonically tutors for Demons. If this Demon theme ends up being prevalent enough to warrant a typal theme around it, other pieces of support like Herald of Slaanesh could see price spikes. Some players have already begun identifying this.
If Demons become a typal deck, Herald of Slaanesh will be a card you cannot leave home without. A two-mana reduction on a haste enabler for three mana is absolutely ridiculous. Because this is a Warhammer 40K card, if it does see an increase in demand, Herald of Slaanesh could become surprisingly difficult to find. If you expect to try and make Demon Typal a thing, this is another card we would consider picking up ASAP. That said, there may not be enough Demon support in Duskmourn to warrant this strategy.
If there is enough Demon support, MTG players already have a Demon Commander. Be’lakor, the Dark Master grants a Grixis color identity and a direct way to support the Demon archetype. The card can refill your hand and turn and Demons entering play into direct damage.

Demons and Enchantments
Many MTG players have already keyed into these two themes when interacting with Duskmourn. There is a surprising amount of Demon support already in existence because of Warhammer 40K, and Enchantress players are already starting to become incredibly excited about this set. If you’re interested in trying out either of these themes for Commander or constructed, we would recommend you start picking up the pieces immediately.
