MTG is entering an exciting time with the growth of MTG Arena and more products than ever before. Earlier this year saw a first for the collectable card game, a crossover set including one of Wizards of the Coasts’ own IPs – Dungeons & Dragons.

Adventure in the Forgotten Realms substituted this year’s Core Set to a positive reception. A little more nuanced compared to Core Sets, there’s an abundance of flavor and mechanics for MTG and D&D fans alike. With the set’s release, it’s brought up plenty of discourse in the community about whether these crossover sets will be a regular occurrence. Fortunately, Head Designer Mark Rosewater shed light on the discourse

MTG Designer Discusses Future Crossover MTG Sets

Ten Most Expensive MTG Cards From the Forgotten Realms

On Rosewater’s Blog, Blogatog, the Head Designer is asked if there are any more crossover sets on the horizon.

vasil4444 asks: “Hi Mark! I just want to thank you for an amazing year of Magic! I loved Kaldheim and Strixhaven has become my all-time favourite set! However, I am not a fan of AFR (Adventures in the Forgotten Realms) and it has me concerned for the future of premier sets. I wish premier sets were reserved for Magic’s own IP.”

Mark Rosewater:Future sets with non-Magic properties will not be premier sets.

Premier sets in this instance mean sets that are Standard-legal or unique such as Strixhaven: School of Mages or Modern Horizons 2. As a result of this comment from Rosewater, Adventure in the Forgotten Realms is likely to be the first and only crossover premier set we’ll see in MTG. Also, it means next year we’re likely to go back to the traditional Core Set template that Forgotten Realms replaced this year.

This won’t be the end of crossovers with MTG with Universes Beyond coming soon. Universe Beyond is a new crossover project that will include IPs including Stranger Things, Warhammer 40,000, and Lord of the Rings. It’s suspected these efforts will come in the form of Commander pre-constructed decks and Secret Lair drops. Either way, there’s plenty coming for every kind of MTG fan.

Although crossover collaborations won’t be in dedicated premier sets, it’s exciting to see what will come soon.
