The MTG Spider Man set feels incredibly hit or miss. If you’re not a Marvel or Spider Man fan, there’s a good chance this set isn’t exciting. Outside of a few cards, there aren’t many super staples that you need to pay attention to, and the theming makes it easy to ignore. If you are a fan of the franchise, however, this crossover is incredible.
Financially, it’s much the same story for MTG Spider Man. Thanks to the lack of soon-to-be meta-defining cards, prices are fairly low across the board. That’s the case for everything except The Soul Stone, at least. As a unique Indestructible mana rock with an extra trick up its sleeve, this is the one card to pay attention to.
For a long while, The Soul Stone has been the chase card in MTG Spider Man. Presale prices are hovering around $93 right now, which feels absolutely absurd, even when taking into account preorder pricing. This price tag, however, is nothing compared to the value of the card’s rarest variant. Found exclusively in Collector Boosters, Cosmic Foil copies of The Soul Stone are already selling for over $10,000!
MTG Cosmic Foil Soul Stone
While The Soul Stone is already the MTG Spider Man card everyone wants, this variant is the undisputed king. As the rarest treatment in the entire set, this card is clearly the chase card that Wizards wants everyone hunting. Curiously, despite the immense rarity of this card, this variant of The Soul Stone isn’t serialized.
Speaking of rarity, despite not being serialized, this card may well be rarer than one of these cards. Sadly, we don’t have specific numbers to confirm this, but the language Wizards have been using is definitely unorthodox. Typically, when discussing cards like the 77 serialized Traveling Chocobos, Wizards states they appear in “less than 1% of Collector Boosters.”
In comparison, when talking about MTG Spider Man, Wizards states Cosmic Foil variants of The Soul Stone appear in “an extremely low quantity of Collector Boosters.” Theoretically, the rarity of these cards could be comparable, but Spider Man also has a less than one percent chase pull. This is the Borderless Gauntlet variant of The Soul Stone, which “appears in less than 1% of Collector Boosters.”
Due to this unique wording, it seems that textless Cosmic Foil copies of The Soul Stone are uniquely rare within MTG. Potentially, there could be fewer than 77 copies in the entire world, but it’s difficult to speculate on that. Without an official number given through serialization, it’s impossible to know exactly how rare The Cosmic Foil Soul Stone is.
Even without this certainty, MTG players haven’t been afraid to pay obscene amounts of money for this card already.
A Costly Cosmic Foil
While prerelease weekend for MTG Spider Man has only just happened, already a few Cosmic Foil copies of The Soul Stone have been found. Unsurprisingly, these were quickly listed online and sold almost immediately for some obscene prices. Reportedly, on eBay, one copy was sold for $10.500. While obviously not cheap, this price might have actually been a steal.
Over on Card Kingdom, the price of a Cosmic Foil copy of The Soul Stone is currently listed, or rather sold out, at $16,999. Meanwhile, on Reddit, players report seeing listings of up to $18,000 elsewhere on the internet. While these prices do make that eBay sale seem rather tame in comparison, it’s still very early days.
Even though MTG players can go out and buy MTG Spider Man at local game stores, the set isn’t everywhere just yet. Once this Friday rolls around and the set is officially released, supply should increase dramatically. In theory, this could cause prices to fall significantly, but that depends on how many copies emerge.
Without the security of serialization and with Wizards’ weird wording surrounding it, the Cosmic Foil Soul Stone is a real mystery. For better or worse, this makes determining the card’s actual price incredibly difficult. Right now, it sits between the $40,000 serialized Chocobos and $2,000 serialized Aetherspark, and it could go either way.
Future Fancy Foils
Ultimately, all that is certain is that the Cosmic Foil Soul Stone is an incredibly expensive MTG card. Looking ahead, there’s a good chance this will be true for every Infinity Stone in Magic: The Gathering. While not currently confirmed, it seems likely that this chase border and foil treatment will be used for each Infinity Stone.
If this does end up happening, there’s a non-zero chance the cycle could get more expensive over time. Since this treatment is so expensive and collector-focused, having all six stones would be quite the collection. For that to happen, however, Wizards will have to continue using this treatment.
