Codsworth, Handy Helper from the MTG Fallout crossover, is aggressively increasing in price. Considering how popular the MTG X Marvel Secret Lairs truly are, especially for Commander use, this isn’t too surprising. Anything that has looked promising in these decks has seen a price spike over the last few weeks. For Captain America, First Avenger, Codsworth is a powerful card in the 99.
Codsworth, Handy Helper
Codsworth does everything you could want in a Captain America, First Avenger Commander deck. Three relevant equipment-related abilities can supercharge the speed and resiliency of your game. All three of these abilities fit Captain America to a tee, and are all incredibly useful in different situations.
Because Captain America will be an equipment-based deck, protecting your Commander is essential. Voltron-based decks get set back heavily by losing their massive win conditions, especially once you’ve equipped a ton of stuff to it. Ward 2 makes Captain America a bit more difficult to remove, but this likely won’t be relevant once you start stacking tons of equipment onto your Commander. Board wipes remain the scarier tactic when dealing with a suited-up Captain America. Thankfully, Codsworth is also really good at helping you rebuild your board.
Codsworth can act as a ramping piece for equipment, but the robot is also capable of ignoring equipment costs. While Captain America already does this, Codsworth can make equipping and throwing equipment with Captain America’s other ability a lot more natural. You can unequip something to remove some threats and, if you want to re-equip it right away, Codsworth is here to help.
Considering Codsworth’s flexibility in Captain America, it’s no surprise to see the card spiking in price this week. Worth about $4.50 a few weeks back, Codsworth’s higher sales are suddenly spiking to $17. You can still find the card for about $6-8 without much difficulty, but players are beginning to buy multiple copies of the card for these prices.
This suggests that some players expect Codsworth to spike even further. Considering all of the synergies that it has with the Captain America Commander deck, it makes sense.
Should You Buy Codsworth?
Commander spikes like these are generally temporary. Unless the card is considered a larger staple in the format, synergistic archetypal specific cards like Codsworth tend to rise and fall as demand soars for decks that want to use it.
When equipment decks are popular, so is Codsworth. Eventually, however, Captain America’s novelty will wane in the MTG world, and players will move on to more new cards. The demand in Codsworth will diminish as players begin to pick up cards that synergize with the new hot Commander.
Our bet is that Codsworth will start to decline in price once everyone who wants Captain America, First Avenger has it, and finds all the cards they want for their deck. Codsworth is not a great card outside of Equipment and Aura decks and, frankly, those decks aren’t very powerful in the Commander format. If you want to get Codsworth for your Captain America deck, we recommend you either buy it immediately or wait for everything to die down.
