It’s certainly no secret that the MTG Final Fantasy set was a smash hit success. Upon release, this set immediately broke sales records, and it has continued to perform well after the fact. Now, this set is back with a vengeance, as it’s getting a second release for the holiday season.
For better or worse, this second release isn’t as comprehensive as what the Tales of Middle-earth set got. Instead of getting brand new Collector Boosters with tons of new treatments, Final Fantasy is only getting three new products. Specifically, this holiday release includes four new Scene Boxes and a Chocobo Bundle.
While the new cards in the Scene Boxes are definitely exciting, the Chocobo Bundle has already enamored players. This product has only just been released today, yet already some cards are selling for $275!
Painfully Pricy Promos?

Within the Chocobo Bundle, MTG players can find two of 20 different Chocobo Track foil borderless cards. Given the new art and unique foiling technique, it was always expected that these promos would be expensive. At the very least, the product’s assumed scarcity, combined with the random nature of the promos, was a recipe for incredible value.
Currently, it’s unknown just how widely printed the Chocobo Bundle is. Images online show shelves stocked with the product, but demand could be more than enough to eclipse supply. Considering this product has only just launched today, potential problems could easily be on the horizon.
Given the prices that many of the Chocobo Track foil promos are selling for, these bundles could fly off store shelves. At the top end, we’ve got the Snapcaster Mage reprint, which is currently selling for $225. Thankfully, these prices do appear to be dropping fast, as new supply hits the market.
Mercifully, not all of the Chocobo Track foil cards are nearly as expensive as Snapcaster Mage. Vivi Ornitier, for instance, is only selling for around $140 right now. Similarly, Tifa Lockheart, Tataru Taru, Cloud, Midgar Mercenary, and Yuna, Hope of Spira are all selling for around $100.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Barret, Avalanche Leader, and Estinien Varlineau are the cheapest Chocobo Track foils currently. Selling for $11 and $18, respectively, these cards are leagues away from the competition. Despite these relative duds, the Chocobo Bundle still seems like an insane slam dunk.
Free Money?

While the MTG Chocobo Bundle is not cheap, being priced at $109.99 MSRP, the value inside is incredible. Not only do you get the promos, but you get ten Final Fantasy Play Boosters, 10 Chocobo Track foil basics, two additional cards, and a click wheel. The packs from this bundle alone are worth $69.90 at MSRP, and the rest easily makes up the difference.
The new Chocobo Track foil lands, on their own, are currently selling for around $3 each, for instance. This adds another $30 of value to the deal, and even the worst promos are another $28 on top of that. In theory, this means you’re getting $128 of value for your $110 investment.
Admittedly, before you rush out to go and buy every bundle you can get your hands on, these prices may not last. Already, we’ve seen prices tumble down from peaks of $500+, and we still don’t know just how scarce things are. At the very least, it will take a couple of weeks for the market to settle. When that does happen, the pricing landscape may look completely different.
Realistically, while we definitely can’t predict the future, free money rarely exists in MTG. On rare occasions when it does, the market typically reacts and adjusts quickly. If supply exceeds demand, prices will likely crash across the board.
Should the opposite be true, however, and the Chocobo Bundle ends up being scarce, prices could bounce back. Ultimately, it’s far too early to tell which direction things will go right now, so we’ll have to wait and see.
