17-Year-Old Value Engine Sees 283% Price Spike Thanks to New Mechanic

With barely two days left in 2025, we’re fast approaching the new year, and Lorwyn Eclipsed. This upcoming set’s spoiler season begins on January 5th, and it’ll be a quick one, too. Over and done with in just four days, we’re going to have a whole lot of spoilers on our hands very soon.

From the few spoilers we’ve seen so far, it looks like Lorwyn Eclipsed is going to be a heavy hitter. With -1/-1 Counters returning as a major mechanic, this set may even significantly shake up Standard. Even if that doesn’t happen, we’ll be getting tons of new support for Commander thanks to the Blight Curse precon.

With this impending support in mind, it’s no wonder that old -1/-1 Counter support pieces have been on the up. Recently, we saw Harbinger of Night spike significantly, and the same is happening to Blowfly Infestation.

MTG Blowfly Infestation

First released back in Shadowmoor, Blowfly Infestation has never been reprinted in its 18-year lifespan. Considering that Wizards has long been pretty cold on creating -1/-1 Counter-focused cards, this isn’t at all surprising. Now, however, the card is back in vogue as it has some serious synergy with the Blight mechanic.

The big downside of Blight is that your opponents get to choose where they put the -1/-1 Counters. This allows them to either sacrifice their tiny tokens, or stack up counters on an otherwise redundant creature. Sensibly, this should stop the mechanic from running rampant; however, Blowfly Infestation turns the tables.

If an opponent sacrifices a token to Blight’s -1/-1 Counters, then suddenly you’re back in control. Allowing you to pick where the new -1/-1 Counter goes can shut down and kill your opponent’s biggest threats. On its own, this should make any Blight-focused deck a lot scarier, but there are tons of potential synergies to exploit.

Alongside Harbinger of Night, for instance, you can remove a ton of creatures from the board once things get going. Alternatively, using it alongside Crumbling Ashes should ensure that you always have a target to remove. Hell, even just using it with High Perfect Morcant will keep the counter train rolling for extra value.

Essentially, if you’re going to be building a -1/-1 Counter-themed deck, you’ll want a copy of Blowfly Infestation. Unsurprisingly, since players are already preparing for the set’s release, this has caused an impressive price spike recently.

The Spike

MTG Blowfly Infestation Price Spike

While we’ve known the -1/-1 Counter-focused theme of Blight Curse for some time, Blowfly Infestation really picked up after High Perfect Morcant’s reveal. After this card was spoiled on December 11th, there was immediately a steep spike in sales. Somewhat surprisingly, this demand has remained fairly consistent, putting heavy strain on the market.

Thanks to being an older MTG card without any reprints, the supply of Blowfly Infestation wasn’t that impressive to begin with. The only upside was that Blowfly Infestation wasn’t popular, so demand has been next to nothing for the longest time. Now that’s changed; however, it hasn’t taken much to strip the market, leaving only ten listings left.

If you still fancy picking up a copy of Blowfly Infestation, prices for near-mint non-foil copies start at $13.98. Considering this card used to be worth just $3.65 before the spike, this is quite the impressive turnaround. In a little over two weeks, this card has experienced a 283% price spike already.

Sadly, while there are technically a few cheaper copies available on the market, they don’t offer a significant savings. Currently, the cheapest copy of Blowfly Infestation you can get is a $13.30 lightly played copy. Understandably, it seems that savvy MTG players have already picked up all the worst-condition copies over the past few weeks.

The Future

While Blowfly Infestation has been on the up and up recently, personally, I don’t trust it. The potential synergy with Lorwyn Ecilpsed is insane, of course, but there’s that pesky Blight Curse precon. Realistically, this Commander deck is the perfect place for Wizards to reprint Blowfly Infestation.

There might not be any guarantee that Wizards will actually reprint this card; however, it is the perfect fit. It works so well with Blight that it seems like an auto-include for the deck. Due to this, it feels like Blowfly Infestation is bound to be reprinted, but that’s hardly guaranteed even if it does feel likely.

Should Blowfly Infestation be reprinted in the Blight Curse precon, the price of this card will likely crash. Not only will some new supply hit the market, but anyone building around -1/-1 Counters can just get the precon instead. There could still be some demand from players building around other legends, but the price would likely still drop.

Should Blowfly Infestation not be reprinted, however, then its price would surely skyrocket. With minimal supply on the market, a new, potentially even stronger, wave of demand could make it insanely expensive. Whether or not this will end up happening, however, is the real question.

Sadly, as much as we might try, we can’t predict the future of MTG. Due to this, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens when spoilers start. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait long for that, at least, as Blight Curse will be fully spoiled by January 6th at the latest.
