Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and, unsurprisingly, Wizards of the Coast isn’t passing up the opportunity to celebrate. Like everyone else nowadays, WotC has once created a sweet Black Friday promotion for MTG players. Last year, Wizards offered a discount on the latest Secret Lair Superdrop, but they’ve got a different plan this time around.
For Black Friday 2024, Wizards has created a brand new pin that MTG players can get for free, technically. Available at participating WPN stores, this fancy pin should be a nice bonus for anyone planning to buy product this holiday season. If you’re a fan of unique MTG-related trinkets, you’re in for a treat this Black Friday.
Collectible Pins
Starting on November 29th, MTG players will be able to visit their local WPN store and, hopefully, walk away with an AR-enhanced collectible pin. Created by Pinfinity, this pin is of the iconic MTG card back, which looks pretty nifty if you ask us. As you can see above, all you have to do to receive this pin is spend $75 on Magic product.
Currently, it’s unclear what the augmented reality technology will do for this pin once it’s in players’ hands. Past AR-enhanced Pinfinity pins have shown videos, audio tracks, and even offered access to downloadable content. While this pin itself is nice enough, it’s hard to argue with extra gubbins, even if you have to download a free app to access it.
Notably, there are some restrictions with this promotion that you’ll want to keep in mind come Black Friday. For starters, these pins are only available while supplies last, so there’s no guarantee your LGS will have anything available. On top of this, players are only able to receive one pin per day. Hopefully, this limit should slow the speed at which supplies deplete.
In terms of value, there’s no exact value of this exclusive Black Friday MTG pin at the moment as it’s been created for this promotion. That said, looking at the Pinfinity website, their AR-enhanced pins tend to sell for around $14.99.
Mixed Feelings
Overall, it seems as though players are pretty split on how they feel about this style of promotion. Some players feel as though the pins are very high quality. For those that already have some, they seem generally pleased with the product.
On the flip side, though, some players are clearly skeptical of whether these pins add that much extra value and appeal to the initial $75 investment. Others believe that just sticking with the known formula of giving out promo MTG cards, even if they’re on the cheaper side, would be better received by the community.
At the end of the day, these pins seem pretty cool but likely have a niche target audience. For anyone interested, make sure you stop by your local game store to acquire your goodies.
