Best MTG Budget Deck Box
If you’re after a sturdy deck box to home your Commander deck, the current deal on the GERMUN Card Deck Box is hard to beat. Available for $5, the magnetic clasp may seem like a fancy feature, but it’s a big deal.
Having used plastic deck boxes myself for years, I’ve found they have a nasty habit of wearing poorly, often cracking and closing incorrectly. This is especially true for plastic sidewinder boxes, as the larger top makes them more susceptible to wear. This deck box avoids those issues while staying relatively affordable, something that many more prominent brands cannot beat.
That said, if you want something more renowned at a higher price point, the Ultimate Guard Boulder is a nice middle ground that should give you exactly what you’re looking for. In addition to being extremely durable, the Return to Earth series is made almost entirely from renewable resources, making it an eco-conscious choice. While these can be a bit difficult to open, these deck boxes don’t have the same cracking issues as traditional plastic deck boxes with a flip-top.
Ultimately, as long as you’re avoiding plastic deck boxes with a flip-top, your cards aren’t moving around too much, and your deck box fits a sleeved 100-card deck, I don’t think you can really go wrong with budget deck boxes. That said, if you want more protection for an expensive MTG deck, better options exist.
Best MTG Deck Box
Whether you want to include more than just your Commander deck or need extreme protection for your $1000+ deck, Tolarian Community College’s The Academic is hard to beat. Notably, these sleeves are extra thick, ensuring your expensive cards get the best protection.
Besides carrying your Commander deck with ease, The Academic also includes smaller containers for dice, tokens, or other accessories your deck may require. With three of these available, you should be able to fit anything you may need, including a small lifepad if absolutely necessary.
That said, while The Academic offers the average MTG player everything they may need in a deck box, it is quite a bit more expensive, with an asking price of $45. Because of this, I’d personally use The Academic only for more expensive Commander decks that could use the extra protection, or for decks that need a lot of pieces to play properly.
Best Deck Box for Cube
While the recommended deck boxes above work for a typical MTG deck, Cubes require many more cards to play. In these cases, where you need to store hundreds of cards for your needs, the Quiver Time Black Card Carrying Case is exactly what you’re looking for.
