MTG Players Discover Free Avatar Cabbage Companion Easter Egg

Share

Yesterday, Avatar: The Last Airbender finally launched on MTG Arena and Magic Online. As expected, MTG players have been brewing up a storm since then, with all manner of unique decks hitting the scene. As if that wasn’t enough to get excited about, there are also tons of cosmetics on MTG Arena to enjoy.

While there are a lot of them, sadly, these cosmetics technically don’t come cheap. Outside of the Mastery Pass, bundles of Avatar avatars and sleeves can cost between 500 and 1500 gems. Thankfully, you can purchase these bundles with gold, which is free to earn, to mitigate the cost entirely. As if that wasn’t enough free stuff, it seems the MTG Arena developers have hidden a few fun easter eggs for players to discover.

My Cabbages!

Alongside the new Avatar cards and cosmetics on MTG Arena, there’s also a new battlefield to admire. While this new board doesn’t have Hearthstone levels of interactivity, there are still a couple of vaguely interesting features. When clicking around, you can find some lights that sparkle and a lute that’ll play a note when you click on it, for instance.

Admittedly, these features aren’t the most exciting, but there is also a cabbage cart right by your opponent. If you click on this a couple of times, you’ll only see a puff of cabbage leaves as a neat, flavorful nod to the show. Should you keep clicking, however, the cart will fall to pieces, making the reference that much more flavorful.

While flavor is fun and all, it turns out this isn’t the only reason to keep clicking. As MTG players quickly discovered on Reddit, upon finishing a match where you destroyed the cabbage cart, you’ll get a new message in your in-game inbox. Titled, “My Cabbages!!!” this surprise message plays into the meme’s flavor even more, and contains the titular free gift.

“This place is worse than Omashu! Does your appetite for destruction know no bounds? You’ve destroyed my cabbage cart countless times. The only thing I can think to satisfy your hunger is this. My most precious stock…

The most perfect vegetable in all the land…

My most prized possession…

My…final…cabbage.”

Wizards of the Coast

Upon claiming the reward attached to this message, you’ll receive a new cabbage companion pet for free. For better or worse, this new pet doesn’t appear to have any fancy tricks when on the battlefield, as clicking it only gives off a puff of leaves. Despite this, MTG players on Reddit are loving this surprise free addition to the game.

To get this pet for yourself, all you need to do is click repeatedly on the cabbage card on the Avatar battleground until it breaks. The only real trouble is getting the Avatar battleground to show up, as, according to Wizards’ WotC_Jay, it won’t appear everywhere. Thankfully, you can repeatedly run bot matches to expedite the process if needed.

Fantastic Flavor All Around

As much as free content is always nice, the attention to detail speaks volumes here. Off the back of MTG Spider Man, there were real concerns surrounding the flavor of Universes Beyond sets. Even Through the Omenpaths, which should have felt more like Magic, ended up feeling rather slapdash.

In comparison, the Avatar: The Last Airbender MTG set has delivered consistently fantastic flavor that largely fits Magic’s universe. Outside of the visually heinous Source Material bonus sheet reprints, this set has rightfully been praised consistently. Hopefully, future Universes Beyond sets will follow in Avatar’s footsteps. Whether or not that will happen, however, remains to be seen.
