$110 Game Changer Headlines Another Disappointing MTG Reprint Lineup

Share

Edge of Eternities employs a rather bizarre Bonus Sheet that, sadly, has had a lot of disappointing hits. Focused on giving iconic lands a Space Opera-inspired twist, the Stellar Sights Bonus Sheet has looked rather lackluster so far. Outside of an early Gemstone Caverns reveal, a lot of these reprints have been rather forgettable.

Thankfully, that has all changed today. The clear chase card for the Stellar Sights Bonus Sheet has been revealed, and it’s a card a lot of MTG fans are going to want. Ancient Tomb is one of the most powerful lands in all of Magic: The Gathering.

Ancient Tomb

Getting two mana for the cost of two life on a single land is an absolutely incredible rate. Dubbed a Sol Land in reference to Sol Ring, Ancient Tomb warps Legacy, sees play in Vintage, and remains an auto-include in any competitive EDH deck. The card is so powerful that Ancient Tomb is a Game Changer, banned at lower Commander Bracket levels. In other words, Ancient Tomb has a profound effect on every format it’s legal in.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen an Ancient Tomb reprint. Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth was the last time this card appeared in an MTG set, and it was a rather rare chase card there, as well. The last time the card appeared as a normal set inclusion was in Ultimate Masters as a rare.

Thanks to this card seeing incredible demand from the Legacy, Vintage, and Commander communities, the cheapest market average for the card hovers around $110. Depending on how rare this variant of Ancient Tomb is, there’s a good chance it could go for a bit more. Balin’s Tomb from The Lord of the Rings, for example, goes for $143 in its cheapest variant. It’s unlikely that this Ancient Tomb’s traditional variant will go for that much, but the artwork is rather stunning.

As a reminder, because Ancient Tomb is being printed in the Stellar Sights Bonus Sheet, it means that this card will be appearing in Edge of Eternities Limited. It will probably be rather rare to see one of these, but Ancient Tomb is an absolutely ludicrous card to have access to in a game of Limited. This will likely have a very high win rate.

Terrain Generator

Another recently revealed Stellar Sights card, Terrain Generator, isn’t nearly as exciting as Ancient Tomb, but might be a better reprint than expected. This card is rather popular in mono-colored Commander decks thanks to its ability to ramp out land drops. Green may not need it, but colors that struggle with ramp, like blue or black, can use Terrain Generator to keep up with opponents in Commander.

The card has about a $2 reprint value, with its latest printing coming from The List. Terrain Generator certainly isn’t the most exciting reprint in the world, but worse cards could be chosen.

Sunken Citadel

Moving on to some bizarre duds, Sunken Citadel starts a weird pattern of Lost Caverns of Ixalan reprints in Stellar Sights. Considering that Lost Caverns will be Standard-legal post-rotation, it’s weird to see a reprinting of lands from the set so early.

Sunken Citadel certainly has its niches, especially when paired with lands that have activated abilities that cost mana. This card was rather instrumental in past Mono-White land destruction Standard decks, and still regularly sees play in Mono-White control. The card also occasionally appears in Pioneer and Modern.

That said, the card isn’t exactly a meta staple anywhere, and doesn’t have a ton of Commander demand, either. Sunken Citadel is only worth about 30 cents, as a result.

Echoing Deeps

Continuing our bizarre trend of Lost Caverns of Ixalan reprints, we have Echoing Deeps, another sub-$0.50 card that sees rather fringe play. This card almost exclusively sees play in Modern’s Amulet Titan deck, and is rather core in that list thanks to various graveyard-based combos involving Aftermath Analyst. The card otherwise sees some semi-consistent Duel Commander play, but is understandably rather unpopular in other formats. This is the first reprint for Echoing Deeps, but not really one anyone was asking for.

This is the type of card that may appreciate in value in the long run as supply dries up, but for now, Echoing Deeps is a Stellar Sights dud.

Dust Bowl

Considering Dust Bowl just got a reprint on the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Breaking News Bonus Sheet, it’s really weird to see this card appear again so soon. Back in Outlaws, Dust Bowl was considered a fantastic reprint. The card had only one reprint since 1999, prior to Thunder Junction, and it appeared as a super exclusive Zendikar Expedition. All of the old variants of Dust Bowl still have a decent secondary market value, but the Breaking News variant is anything but.

Now, Dust Bowl has a secondary market value of 25 cents. Thanks to awkward legality, the card only really sees play in Duel Commander, as well. Legacy has access to Wasteland, which is leagues ahead of Dust Bowl, and the card is banned everywhere else it would be relevant. The only other format that even plays a little of this card is Premodern.

So, while Ancient Tomb is an absolutely incredible chase card, the rest of Stellar Sights is looking very disappointing. There are a few notable reprints in a sea of mediocre chaff. Considering that this Bonus Sheet only has cards at a rare rarity or higher, this is rather disappointing.

The artwork for the cards, however, is incredibly gorgeous, which could give these reprints a little more value in the long run. Either way, some MTG players will be opening Ancient Tomb at their prerelease, giving them an incredible advantage in Edge of Eternities Limited.
