Players often joke about Magic being trapped in a “never-ending spoiler season,” but things really are heading that way. When we’re not seeing new cards for a mainline set like Foundations, we’re getting spoilers for a new supplemental product or Secret Lair drop. Factor in leaks, which spread things out even further, and there’s very little breathing room between new content.
Leaks are, thankfully, getting rarer these days. That said, they’re not gone entirely. This week, Dutch gaming retailer Spellenhuis put out a product page for Aetherdrift ahead of time. As a result, a new MTG Aetherdrift leak is now out in the wild. While no actual cards or images have been revealed, this leak did show off some key details, of both the set and its story.
Guaranteed Vehicles And Showcase Racing
You can check out this MTG Aetherdrift leak for yourself via the Spellenhuis website. While it only contains a few paragraphs of information, there’s still a lot we can learn about the set here.
In a section labeled “What Awaits You?,” the leak outlines some of the unique features of Aetherdrift booster packs. Specifically, it notes that “Each Play Booster and Collector Booster contains a special Vehicle card with a chance of an interplanar variant.” Right out of the gate, this is quite interesting. Given the racing theme, we all knew Aetherdrift would be Vehicle-heavy. A guaranteed Vehicle in every pack is something else entirely, however. What War of the Spark did for planeswalkers, Aetherdrift looks to be doing for Vehicles.
Some have referred to this Vehicle slot as a ‘Bonus Sheet’ online, but it’s unclear if this is the case. As it stands, these guaranteed Vehicles could easily be drawn from the main set. The “interplanar variant” detail is also interesting, implying some kind of special Showcase style or foiling treatment for the set’s Vehicle cards.
Speaking of Showcase styles, the leak also mentions “exclusive Showcase Racing cards.” Pretty much every new Magic set these days gets its own Showcase style, so it’s not surprising to see Aetherdrift get one too. No other details beyond the name were given in the leak, so what it will look like is pure speculation at this point. I’d expect something akin to Duksmourn’s Showcase Paranormal style, however. Something a little more high-tech than the typical Magic frame, in keeping with the themes of the set.
New Story Details
In addition to these details, the MTG Aetherdrift leak also formally clarified a few details of the set’s story. It’s been known for a while that Aetherdrift will take place over three different planes. There’s been a lot of speculation as to which three planes these will be, however.
In the leak, both Kaladesh and Amonkhet are mentioned specifically. This confirms two of the three Aetherdrift planes. While many players have already figured this out based on the artwork revealed at MagicCon: Las Vegas, it’s still good to know. The third and final plane is not mentioned in the leak. Mark Rosewater has stated that this is a plane we haven’t visited before, so clearly it’s being set up as a big reveal later down the line.
It’s still a while until Aetherdrift previews begin in earnest, but this leak should give players plenty to think about until then. Currently, it’s unknown when Wizards is going to officially reveal more details about Aetherdrift. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about it before the end of 2024, but that remains to be seen for now.
