Article at a Glance

Preview season is upon us for Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, and one of the first things shown to the community was the new mechanic of Dungeons. We covered more about those earlier in the day. Over on the Magic Twitch channel, during today’s WeeklyMTG, more details were revealed by a couple of the leads around Dungeons, as well as a couple other goodies.

The real big thing that was answered by the leads was that there will not be any additional Dungeons printed, even in supplementary products like commander decks. The 3 dungeons that we get in the main set are all that’s coming. The reason for this is that when designing the dungeons, they had relatively little space on the physical cards to work with, so they had to pack some density of mechanics into each card. If they made more than the 3, learning all of the ins and outs of each dungeon would be pretty difficult. Also since they have to pack so much density into each dungeon, they didn’t want each one to lose it’s feel and identity.

New Preview Cards and other details

We got a couple new preview cards as well during the stream, in Cloister Gargoyle, and Dungeon Crawler. We also learned that White has the most cards with Venture, usually couple with either Blue or Black. All colors will have Venture in some fashion, but you’ll primarily see it in white. We’ll also be seeing oversized versions of the dungeons, which will be the same size as the old commander oversized cards. This will be nice to be able track our progress through each dungeon a bit easier. Lastly, they stated that even though it’d make sense to have the Party mechanic from Zendkiar, that mechanic will not be in this set. The reason for this is while there’s are classes from D&D that would fit, there are many more classes, and class identity is incredibly important.
