Wizards of the Coast just released Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms on Magic: The Gathering Arena, ahead of its tabletop release. The new crossover expansion brings the lore and world of D&D into Magic, featuring familiar characters such as Drizzt Do’Urden, Lolth, and Ellywick, as well as various dragons and dungeons that players love about the popular tabletop game. But did you know that the D&D crossover set was predicted by a fan two years ago? It turns out they were right!
A Redditor who goes by DatBolas predicted that Wizards will make a D&D crossover Magic set, and although he was off by about two years, he brought up some great points about why it makes sense for WotC to create this kind of product.
The fan mentioned D&D-themed cards previously released such as Bag of Holding and Sword of Dungeons and Dragons from Unstable. The post also provided a link to Mark Rosewater’s Blogatog post, in which the Magic head designer responded to a fan about D&D and Magic “crossing the streams”.
“Magic planes have been bleeding into D&D rules supplements for years, culminating with a fully realized book last fall for Ravnica,” DatBolas wrote. “If you are willing to print D&D Rules supplements for Magic, why not print Magic cards with D&D lore/flavor? If you are going to print a few, why not go to a D&D plane and do it right? The only small snag I can see is that D&D doesn’t have a good analog for planeswalkers, something every Magic set needs. But it is entirely possible to have a D&D-verse troop of planeswalkers, or to cross the streams with a small number of classic Magic planeswalkers.”
It looks like DatBolas also correctly predicted the Adventure mechanic from the Fall 2019 set, Throne of Eldraine. Their prediction didn’t exactly describe the new set’s dungeon mechanic, and we already know that traps and quest mechanics are not in Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, but a lot of these points made sense.
