Lorwyn Eclipsed Theme Decks Reveal Potent Counterspell is Returning to Standard

Share

Over the past couple days, we have been absolutely bombarded with information about upcoming sets. We now know what the entire year of 2026 has to bring. With regards to Lorwyn Eclipsed, we also got a first look at some gnarly spoilers.

Lorwyn Eclipsed even features two theme decks for newer players that are looking to get into Standard. The images for these decks have been revealed, and thanks to some image finessing, we’re able to see the full decklists for each item. These theme decks may not be at the power level of top tier Standard options, but they do contain some value. Most importantly, the Pirates decklist gives us a good hint about one premium reprint returning to Standard.

Pirate Theme Deck

The Pirate theme deck, besides being focused on the Pirate creature type, emphasizes a couple of different mechanics. Primarily, you have a decent number of vehicles as well as discard synergies. You can find the whole transcribed decklist below, courtesy of lord_darkis on Reddit.

Pirates Decklist:

  • 3 Subterranean Schooner
  • 3 Inti, Seneschal of the Sun
  • 1 Gastal Thrillroller
  • 3 Fearless Swashbuckler
  • 2 Captain Howler, Sea Scourge
  • 2 Magmatic Galleon
  • 4 Spyglass Siren
  • 4 Marauding Mako
  • 4 Burst Lightning
  • 4 Scrounging Skyray
  • 2 Staunch Crewmate
  • 2 Broadside Barrage
  • 4 Secluded Courtyard
  • 4 Swiftwater Cliffs
  • 8 Island
  • 8 Mountain

AND

  • 2 Spell Snare (Likely a Reprint in Lorwyn)

As far as value is concerned, this decklist is significantly less appealing than the Angels theme deck we’ll get to later. The only card currently legal in Standard that’s worth more than $1 in its cheapest, traditional form according to TCGplayer is Marauding Mako, which is an uncommon. All the rares are quite cheap.

That being said, many of the cards are Constructed staples. Inti, Seneschal of the Sun is a strong discard outlet that is starting to see extra play in Pioneer with the emergence of Spider combo. In the uncommon slot, Marauding Mako, Spyglass Siren, and Burst Lightning are all Standard staples in Izzet Cauldron, Dimir midrange, and mono-red aggro, respectively.

This alone adds some appeal to the product, as this can be a good tool for newer players to learn how these different cards play in a cohesive manner.

An Exciting Reprint

Spell Snare

What immediately stands out among the cards in the Pirate theme deck, however, are the two copies of Spell Snare. While Spell Snare hasn’t officially been revealed as a reprint in Lorwyn Eclipsed, given that these theme decks are designed for Standard, a reprint seems inevitable.

This isn’t your ordinary piece of counter magic. It may be narrow, but the upside of trading your own mana spell for any two-drop is huge. In Modern, this card serves as an elite catch-up mechanism. Being able to counter Psychic Frog when on the draw may be the difference between winning and losing.

In Standard, Spell Snare has a lot of potential. Many of the two-drops out of Izzet, including Proft’s Eidetic Memory and Fear of Missing Out, get hit by Spell Snare. These cards also get hit by Annul, but Spell Snare has targets in a variety of other matchups and can therefore be a decent maindeck card.

Countering Emberheart Challenger out of mono-red is a nice tempo play in your favor. Against midrange and control decks, Spell Snare nabs many black removal spells, No More Lies, and even Consult the Star Charts later in the game.

Spell Snare is more flexible than it looks. It is also worth over $3 as an uncommon, though this price could definitely go down following a Standard reprint.

Angel Theme Deck

Unlike the Pirate deck, the other theme deck, emphasizing the Angel creature type, comes with a handful of cards worth $3 or more. You can see the full list of cards below.

Angels Decklist:

  • 2 Lyra Dawnbringer
  • 2 Lightstall Inquisitor
  • 1 Pawpatch Recruit
  • 1 Get Lost
  • 4 Giada, Font of Hope
  • 2 Split Up
  • 3 Exemplar of Light
  • 4 Llanowar Elves
  • 4 Youthful Valkyrie
  • 4 Inspiring Overseer
  • 2 Ride’s End
  • 4 Starfield Shepherd
  • 4 Blossoming Sands
  • 4 Secluded Courtyard
  • 8 Plains
  • 8 Forest

AND

  • 1 Chomping Changeling (new, not yet revealed)
  • 2 Personify (new, not yet revealed)

Lyra Dawnbringer is the only mythic rare featured in either decklist, and is worth just over $3 apiece. The same can be said for Exemplar of Light, which is a powerful finisher for life gain decks. Get Lost is valued at just over $4, though it only appears as a one-of.

Split Up sits at roughly $2, and Pawpatch Recruit is worth over $1. These cards collectively provide about $23 of value. Many of the other cards, while not super valuable, are Pioneer staples in the Angels deck. Giada, Font of Hope, Youthful Valkyrie, and Inspiring Overseer all fit the bill.

The last cards, known as Chomping Changeling and Personify, are new. We don’t know what these cards do yet. Still, this should add some extra excitement to the Angels deck.
