Earlier this month, Wizards of the Coast has given us our first look at the brand new Magic: The Gathering cards from the upcoming crossover set, Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, giving us our first look at the MTG versions of familiar D&D characters like Drizzt Do’Urden, Lolth, Spider-Queen, and Bruenor Battlehammer. While Wizards hasn’t launched the official spoiler season for Adventures in the Forgotten Realms yet, fans are already excited to find out more about the upcoming set, and they will probably be delighted to find out that one card may have potentially been leaked ahead of the set’s July release date, and it reveals a new dungeon-delving mechanic, which is one of the foundation type of adventures that Dungeons & Dragons is known for.
On Wednesday, the Rulesbook version of Cloister Gargoyle card was shared on the MTG Subreddit, which apparently came from an artist’s private social media account, and was then shared to a larger Facebook group. In addition to being a three-to-cast 0/4 white Gargoyle creature, its card text reads, “When Cloyster Gargoyle enters the battlefield, venture into the dungeon. As long as you’ve completed a dungeon, Cloister Gargoyle gets +3+0 and has flying.”

This leak raises more questions than answers: How does venturing into the dungeon works in Magic gameplay? Will there be dungeon cards in the game? And how can you complete a dungeon during a game of Magic? This new mechanic sounds innovative, and I’m sure this will get fans of both of Wizards of the Coast’s major franchises more hyped for the upcoming crossover set..
Wizards of the Coast hasn’t revealed how this mechanic actually works but expect the publisher to reveal more details about Adventures in the Forgotten Realms as we approach closer to its release date in the upcoming weeks. Right now, all we can do is speculate about how this mechanic works, but this is already reminding me of the Enter the Dungeon card from Unhinged and Unsanctioned (two of Magic’s silver-bordred joke sets).
This new dungeon mechanic probably won’t work this way, but I’m sure it’s going to bring the kind of fun we love from Dungeons & Dragons.
