We’re about half way through the previews for Jumpstart: Historic Horizons, which finish up on August 3rd. Historic Horizons doesn’t function quite like a normal set that some may be familiar with. This set is not one where you can just buy packs from the in game shop, so how do you go about getting cards from Jumpstart: Historic Horizons?

Wild Cards

Wild cards

The first method of getting cards is through crafting them with Wild Cards. While there’s over 750 cards in the set, we know that about 400 of those cards are already cards that exist in Magic Arena. While this means that there’s less new cards, that also means theres potentially a lot less cards to acquire. There’s about 220 cards from Modern Horizons and Modern Horizons 2, and then about 120 “new to Arena” reprints, as well as the 31 digital only cards.

Jumpstart Limited Time Event

Wizards of the Coast

Similar to the last time Jumpstart was on Arena, there was a limited time event where you would play Jumpstart. This entails drafting 1 of 3 packs, each with their own theme. Once you pick the first one, you’ll be given a second set of 3 packs to pick and then you’ll combine those 2 packs and play.

Some nice tweaks that have been done for this iteration of Jumpstart is that rather than having 4 different versions of a theme like in the old set, this time, certain cards may be changed out for alternate cards that also fit that theme. Also what’s nice is that the system will keep track of which packs you pick, and you’ll have a higher chance to see a packet that you didn’t see in a previous run of the event. You’ll also get a nice balance of mono and multicolored pack options for a more diverse play experience.

At the end of the day, the best way to get cards is going to be by combining both of these avenues. If you play Historic, then you’ll know that these cards are going to make an impact on the format. The gameplay of Jumpstart was fun, and this one should be just as good, so definitely get into some events, but I know that I’ll also be immediately crafting some key rares and mythics that I need for decks to ladder with.

Jumpstart: Historic Horizons is a Magic Arena only set. The set will be only legal for the Historic Format. It releases on August 12, 2021 on Magic Arena and contains 782 cards, comprised of 31 new Arena Only cards, and 751 reprints from Modern Horizons, Modern Horizons 2 and more.
