What's everyone having for dinner today? Is it an artifact token?

Who doesn’t love a good snack? It’s important not to eat anything too messy while playing with Magic: The Gathering cards though because the last thing you want is hot sauce on your Lightning Bolt. Wait, we’re meant to be talking about the Food mechanic, aren’t we?

Well, Food in MTG is a type of artifact token that some cards create, and some cards use, that can generally be sacrificed for two mana in order to gain three life. It’s not the most exhilarating token in MTG, but it’s still a good one to look at to see if it’s worth building around in Commander.

The best food producers in MTG

First up, what makes good food? Well, Gyome, Master Chef is a four-mana black and green 5/3 with trample is one of the best for sure. It reads, “At the beginning of your end step, create a number of Food tokens equal to the number of nontoken creatures you had enter the battlefield under your control this turn.” Plus, you can pay one mana and sacrifice a food to tap a creature and make it indestructible.

Gilded Goose is another wonderful creator of food, because you can simply pay two mana and tap it to create a token. Plus, of course, you can sacrifice a food to generate mana too, which is a very nice bonus. Feasting Troll King is another great choice, as it creates three food tokens if it enters the battlefield having been cast from your hand.

There’s also Tireless Provisioner, which is a three-mana creature that allows you to create a food or treasure token whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control. This is absurdly good, and an essential creature for any food deck too.

The best food payoffs in MTG

Trail of Crumbs is a two-mana enchantment that creates one food token when it enters, but it also allows you to pay one mana when you sacrifice a food token. If you do so, “look at the top two cards of your library. You may reveal a permanent card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.” We like cards, so this is good.

Wicked Wolf is a four-mana 3/3 that allows you to sacrifice food tokens to put +1/+1 counters on it, and also give it indestructible until the end of the turn. You have to tap Wicked Wolf too, but it makes it an absolutely incredible defender and fighter.

Finally, we’ve got Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar. This is a 3/3 black and red creature that you can only cast if you’ve discarded a card in that turn, but if you have, it only costs one mana to cast it. It also reads, “When Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a card named The Underworld Cookbook, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle.” This artifact lets you discard cards for food, but also sacrifice it to return a creature from your graveyard to your hand. Plus, you can sacrifice two food tokens with them to have a creature to deal six damage to itself.

Food can be good in Commander, but it requires a lot of support. Generally speaking, we’d merely incorporate these things into a token or artifact deck in general, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it work.
