Gravecrawler has been around forever. The Zombie is easy to abuse thanks to its small mana value and the ability to cast it from your graveyard. The card reigned over opponents back in the Hogaak days and, while it’s not nearly as powerful as it used to be, Gravecrawler is back in a new Modern combo deck. As a result, the card’s price is rising across variants.
Gravecrawler in Mono Black

Gravecrawler plays an exciting role in the new Warren Soultrader combo deck. Able to constantly recur itself from your graveyard, this is a crucial combo piece that allows Marionette Apprentice and Warren Soultrader to drain your opponent for lethal damage. This is done by sacrificing Gravecrawler to create a Treasure with Warren Soultrader.
The sacrifice of Gravecrawler and the Treasure causes the opponent to lose two life. The Treasure can be used to cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard since Warren Soultrader is a zombie. Rinse and repeat! This, combined with grindy elements like Cthonian Nightmare allows this deck to be deadly and consistent.
This powerful combo deck isn’t the best thing to do in Modern, but it remains a powerful option for players who want to try something different. With multiple 5-0 MTGO leagues, and even some MTGO Challenges under its belt, this deck should be able to win a local RCQ-level event with some dedication and some luck. Yes, it’s a better option to play Nadu Shuko until that deck gets the ban everyone assumes it will get, but not everyone wants to buy the deck since it’s basically on borrowed time.
Price Jumps
As far as price jumps go, Gravecrawler has doubled in price across its variants. This iconic Zombie has a surprising amount of printings. Here’s a list of all the changes for non foil variants of each printing (with a few exceptions):
- List Reprint: From $3.60 to $6.85
- Buy-a-Box Promo (foil only) From $6 to $13.85
- Jumpstart: From $3.35 to $9 (time period is a bit longer thanks to missing data)
- Double Masters: From $4 to $7 (missing data here, as well)
- Dark Ascension: From $4 to $8 (Outlier sales push towards $10)
- Duel Decks: Blessed VS, Cursed: Current sales are turbulent, ranging from $5-$11
- Secret Lair: From $17 to $24 ($30 outlier)
Judging from these prices, $6 is a good target when acquiring Gravecrawler, at least currently. Whether you need the card for Commander or are trying to build the Warren Soultrader deck for yourself, Gravecrawler is easy to abuse, making it a sought-after commodity.
