Out of the seven Magic: The Gathering sets releasing in 2025, nothing compares to Final Fantasy. This set is already record-breaking as the best-selling set, long before it’s even been released. With this in mind, it’s safe to say that hype for the set is more than anything we’ve ever seen before.
Thankfully, the wait for proper previews from Final Fantasy is almost over. Across the past few weeks, we’ve seen the occasional leak and birthday-based spoiler, but now we’re getting the real deal. This week, Wizards of the Coast is finally going to show off Final Fantasy with the set’s official debut. This event will kickstart the set’s spoiler season, so it’s all go very soon.
Final Fantasy Debut Event
This weekend, on May 10th, the debut event for Final Fantasy will take place at PAX East. Specifically, this event is due to take place at 9 a.m. PT (12 p.m. ET), and it’ll be broadcast live on Twitch and YouTube. As always, we’ll also be covering all the latest and greatest reveals right here, so you can just watch this space.
Unfortunately, while we do know the time and place for this debut stream, there are still plenty of unknowns. There’s no telling if we’ll see any more new mechanics, for instance, or what characters will show up. Given the immense scope of the Final Fantasy franchise, there’s certainly no end to what’s possible.
Thankfully, while the contents of this event are still shrouded in mystery, Wizards of the Coast has shared some important details. Most recently, Wizards has teased that Cloud will be one of the many cards spoiled during the debut. While this reveal of a future reveal is entirely unsurprising, it does at least give us a peek at Cloud’s mono white color identity.
Outside of this teasing spoiler, we also know that Ben Starr will be hosting the debut showcase. Most recently, Starr has been known as the face of Balatro and is quickly becoming a beloved celebrity in the gaming sphere. Starr also played Clive Rosfield, the main character of Final Fantasy 16.
As if this wasn’t enough star appeal, Canadian Wrestler Kenny Omega has also previously been confirmed to be at the event. Whether or not this means we’ll be getting a bizarre wrestling crossover is currently unclear. What we do know, at least, is that Gavin Verhey, Zakeel Gordon, Daniel Holt, and Dillon Devenry will also lead the debut showcase presentation.
What Players Want
As mentioned, there’s no telling what will actually be revealed during the Final Fantasy debut showcase. Obviously, we’re bound to see some of the biggest names from the Final Fantasy franchise, but that doesn’t make guessing any easier. There are so many iconic characters in Final Fantasy, after all, that picking which handful to show off is the real difficulty.
Even within the set itself, Final Fantasy has so much going on that there’s little guarantee what will and won’t be included. Unsurprisingly, this hasn’t stopped MTG players from speculating about what the set may contain. If anything, the sheer litany of iconic Final Fantasy characters has just fueled this even more than usual.
Curiously, on social media, one of the most common hopes for the Final Fantasy set is a lot of Cid. Thanks to appearing in almost every Final Fantasy game, Wizards technically has the opportunity to print “Sixteen mechanically unique cards named ‘Cid’.” Sadly, this does feel unlikely given how much ground Wizards has to cover, but it would be a hilarious deep cut.
Outside of this surprisingly common suggestion, some players also hoped to see Behemoth. Curiously, this card would technically be a crossover for both Final Fantasy and Monster Hunter, thanks to making an appearance in both games.
On top of these suggestions, tons of players have chimed in with their own personal hopes for this crossover. Setzer, Rydia, King Malboro, and countless more characters have all been requested, however, the set only has so much space. Unfortunately, it seems that some MTG players are destined to be disappointed, since there’s simply so much Final Fantasy to cover.
It’s Almost Time
Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to find out what the Final Fantasy set actually has in store. Not only is the Final Fantasy debut showcase just a few days away, but it’s believed this event will kickstart the set’s spoiler season. Once this starts, we’ll have around two weeks of non-stop reveals.
For now, we’ve just got to wait and see what the Final Fantasy debut presentation will have in store. Given this event is a whopping two hours long, it seems there’s going to be no shortage of reveals to go through. Thankfully, we’ll be here on the day to cover all the most important, exciting, and interesting reveals.
