The holidays are just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with Magic: the Gathering holiday promos. Every year since 2006, Wizards of the Coast has released a sweet and flavorful promo card that is bound to have players excited.
From Fruitcake Elemental to last year’s Seasonal Sequels, these acorn-stamped cards are always quite amusing. Even though they aren’t technically legal in any sanctioned format, if you can get your hands on them, there’s a good chance your Commander pod will let you utilize the original card.
Just recently, the holiday promo for 2024 was revealed, and it’s a doozy. Let’s take a closer look at Eggnogger’s ‘Stache in all its glory.
Eggnogger’s ‘Stache
Eggnogger’s ‘Stache is a neat design featuring Loot as the character in the artwork. Loot is completely captivated by the taste of his eggnog, as many of us will be come holiday time.
As you might expect, the card’s rules text is centered around this festive drink, providing value for all those quenching their thirst. For six mana, you get access to an artifact that puts two +1/+1 counters on all of your creatures every turn cycle, so long as you have a drink ‘stache. This requirement should not be difficult to meet during holiday hours!
Just in case you were running low on your beverage, Eggnogger’s ‘Stache even has the upside of letting you tap your lands to refill your drink and keep the +1/+1 counters flowing.
Of course, this card isn’t worded like a traditional Magic card, but if you’re looking to run the card in a Commander setting, it’s not too difficult to improvise. In my eyes, as long as you tap one of your lands each turn to refill your drink, you should be all set to distribute counters as a reward.
Funnily enough, there are plenty of Commanders that would make great use of the effect. Shalai and Hallar threatens to deal a ton of damage with Eggnoggers’ ‘Stache on board. Throw in some Doubling Season-style effects, and you’ll be delivering a blow to your opponents in no time!
As powerful as this card is, looking at this card in a more serious light, it is rather underwhelming for its mana value. Six mana to buff your board during attacks isn’t doing too much. Additionally, this card cannot really provide value on its own. You need other cards for this to do anything, which makes running this inconsistent. That hardly, matters, though, given the context of the card.
Not Overly Abundant
Notably, these foil-only promos aren’t always the easiest to get your hands on. These cards are specifically given out to stores, employees, partners and friends of Wizards of the Coast. As such, there actually won’t be a ton of copies in circulation.
Sometimes, you’ll be able to purchase copies in the secondary market. For instance, currently, there are some copies of Seasonal Sequels up for sale on TCGPlayer, sitting around $14-15 a piece.
So, early on, it may be tough to nab one of these promos, but over time, as demand dies down and more copies enter the secondary market, you should be able to purchase them at a reasonable price.
Regardless, these holiday cards are always a welcome addition every year and are well-received within the community. Eggnogger’s ‘Stache should be no exception.
