Despite Final Fantasy not even being on shelves yet, things are starting to shift in the direction of Magic’s next release: Edge of Eternities. It’ll be a while yet before we actually start seeing story chapters or more spoilers, as this set doesn’t release until August 1st. That said, the author of Magic’s Edge of Eternities storyline has spoken out on Bluesky, and players are excited about what’s been said.
A Standalone Story
Tarkir: Dragonstorm’s story left a lot of questions on the minds of players. What happened to Jace after the Meditation Realm went haywire? What is Nicol Bolas up to now that he’s finally free? Sadly, for fans awaiting answers, you’ll have to wait a little longer.
Roy Graham, the story lead for Edge of Eternities, has spoken out on Bluesky to set expectations for Magic’s next story. Unlike what players may have expected, Edge of Eternities has a standalone story. In other words, this won’t connect to the ongoing narrative last seen in Tarkir: Dragonstorm. Instead, players will have to wait for the return to Lorwyn next year, for that story arc to continue.
“I wanted to take a minute to talk about the upcoming EoE story and set expectations—first, it is fully within Magic canon, but it is also /relatively disconnected/ from the ongoing storyline you know if you’ve been following the web fiction. We wanted to give this setting room to stand on its own”
Roy Graham
Notably, while Edge of Eternities is almost completely removed from the main MTG story, Graham also confirmed that it’s still within MTG’s canon. Considering that Tezzeret has been confirmed to appear in Edge of Eternities, this distinction makes a lot of sense.
Most importantly, there are, “certain revelations in the lore and story that will have big implications for everything else,” but that’s all Graham is saying for now.
For better or worse, this announcement confirms Magic’s core story will not develop for the next eight months. Following Edge of Eternities are two Universes Beyond sets: Spider-Man and Avatar: The Last Airbender. This, however, might not entirely be a bad thing, as Edge of Eternities’ story will hopefully be more approachable, due to its standalone nature.
Exactly What Players Wanted
For many players, Edge of Eternities being a standalone story is actually a good thing. Not only does this allow players to truly explore a new setting without any strings attached, but Edge of Eternities’ potential won’t get dragged down by what the rest of the Multiverse is up to. This allows the author to develop this new setting and characters without being impeded by answering any questions left by Tarkir: Dragonstorm.
Despite Edge of Eternities’ potential being an all-time high, there’s still a lot of skepticism towards the decision to delay Magic’s story until Lorwyn early next year. After all, deciding to take an eight-month break from the main story right after a massive cliffhanger isn’t something that everyone’s a fan of. Like it or not, it will make Lorwyn that much more exciting next year.
