New Infinite Combo Discovered in Edge of Eternities Draft

Share

For better or worse, Edge of Eternities doesn’t look like the most supercharged MTG set of all time. The flavor for this set is absolutely stellar, there’s no denying that, but it might not reshape the metagame. Thankfully, for those looking for a meta mix-up, Standard rotation should provide that, at the very least.

As if a Standard shake-up wasn’t exciting enough, Edge of Eternities Limited is also looking incredibly promising. In a vacuum, the set’s cards should work wonders together, especially alongside the Stellar Sights bonus sheet. Beyond offering some high-value gems, this bonus sheet creates a wild combo that can destroy all your opponent’s lands.

Should one combo not be enough for your liking, eagle-eyed MTG players have just discovered another. While it does need four cards, these are just commons and uncommons. For better or worse, this may make it surprisingly easy to pull off during Draft.

A Turn Four Edge of Eternities Draft Combo

EoE Limited Combo Cards

If you play your cards right, these four cards come together to create a lethal combo by turn four. As Reddit user Kircai handily demonstrated in their nifty diagram, you just need to drop Umbral Collar Zealot and Susurian Voidborn on turns two and three. After this, you can Warp out two copies of Perigee Beckoner.

When playing the Beckoners, you’ll need to target the first with the ETB of the second. After this, you can sacrifice the first Beckoner with Umbral Collar Zealot. This will trigger Susurian Voidborn and bring Beckoner right back into play. This gives you a fresh ETB, which you can target the other Perigee Beckoner with.

From here, you have an infinite loop as you can repeatedly sacrifice and bring back Beckoners. Thanks to Voidborn, this will drain your opponents to death, practically guaranteeing you victory. As if this weren’t strong enough already, there are replacement pieces to boost consistency.

Instead of Susurian Voidborn, Weftstalker Ardent can be used to damage your opponent. Alternatively, using Haliya, Guided by Light or Syr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar lets you gain infinite life. While these latter two cards are rare, they’ll definitely be worth looking out for if this combo is your goal.

Notably, while turn four is the fastest way to play this combo, saving things until turn five may be smarter. By playing everything in order, you run the risk of giving away your game plan somewhat. Due to this, paying the Warp cost of Susarian Voidborn before dropping the Beckoners may be the smart play.

A Viable Four-Card Combo

EoE Limited Combo Alternatives

In the grand scheme of MTG, assembling a four-card combo is usually too slow or cumbersome, at least. Technically, this is true of this combo as well; however, the real struggle in Limited is getting all the relevant pieces. The more cards you need, the harder it’ll be to get everything in both Draft and Sealed.

Since all of the pieces in this combo are common or uncommon, you have a real chance to assemble everything. Depending on your pool, you may even be able to pick up multiple copies of the required pieces. Doing this in Draft does seem a lot more likely than Sealed, since you’ll have more control over your picks.

Right now, this seems like a great strategy to watch out for; however, forcing it may lead to disaster. If this combo turns out to be powerful, and everyone knows to watch out for it, drafting it will be nigh-impossible. That said, if you can manage to build this deck, it should be surprisingly consistent.

Thanks to Limited decks only being 40 cards, there’s a good chance you can mulligan or draw into this combo. Even if you manage that, however, it’s hardly a sure thing. If your opponent is aware of this combo and sees the first or second piece drop, they may immediately remove it. Unless you have a replacement for Zealot or Voidborn, this can leave you dead in the water.

The only upside of this combo, outside of winning, is that it’s basically impossible to lose. Since you can use Zealot to sacrifice Beckoners at instant speed, you can simply play overtop any removal or interaction. Realistically, though, your opponent shouldn’t let you get to that point if they have removal in hand.

Let’s Go Gambling

Right now, it’s impossible to say whether or not this combo will actually be good in Edge of Eternities limited. There’s obviously the chance it’ll win you a game, but winning consistently is another matter entirely. Not only are you not guaranteed to always find the pieces you need, but extra removal can always be boarded in between games.

As if this weren’t enough of an issue, you’ll need to use a fair bit of your deck to construct this combo. Due to this, you may be unable to pivot into a more traditional strategy if your combo gets countered. Even having enough spare stuff in the sideboard to make a viable deck out of seems unlikely.

Ultimately, you should definitely watch out for this combo when playing Edge of Eternities limited. If it’s open enough, you could have a real monster of a deck on your hands. Even if you’re not playing it yourself, however, it’s worth knowing what you might be up against. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how it performs when Edge of Eternities prerelease events start this Friday.
