New D&D Secret Lair Bonus Cards Are All Underwhelming Bulk

Share
Some seriously low-level loot drops!

It’s been a big week for new Secret Lair bonus cards. Just yesterday we saw two hugely exciting bonuses, for the Dandan drop and the mysterious upcoming Deadpool drop. Both of these have the potential to easily pass $50 in value, which is massive in the bonus cards sphere.

Unfortunately, it seems this hot streak was strictly temporary. Today, players have started to receive their drops from the D&D Roll for Initiative Secret Lair Superdrop, and the bonus cards within are unexciting to say the least. While there is still a chance for an eleventh hour save here, this is one of the weakest bonus card lineups we’ve seen in a while.

The D&D ‘Roll For Initiative’ Secret Lair Bonus Cards

D&D Secret Lair Bonus Cards 1

We got a nearly-complete look at the new D&D Secret Lair bonus cards earlier today, in a post by Jacob717 on r/magicTCG. They noted that these cards came from every drop except Gale’s Ambition, which is actually still available on the Secret Lair website.

The biggest hitter here, to use the term incredibly loosely, is Reliquary Tower. This seems like the bonus card for the Lands of the Forgotten drop, and it represents about $3.11 in reprint value. While it’s not powerful, Reliquary Tower is a Commander staple, seeing play in 2.46 million decks according to EDHREC. This gives this reprint a lot of utility, if not a ton of financial value.

Things drop way off value-wise at this point, with Scaled Nurturer taking the silver medal at $0.16. This appears to be the bonus card for the Whispers in Candlekeep drop, which puts the spotlight on Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm. While Nurturer is a fine addition to Miirym decks, showing up in 51% of them by EDHREC numbers, it’s also a deeply unexciting card.

The bonus card for Shadows Over Baldur’s Gate, the Prosper, Tome-Bound drop, is even worse. You Find Some Prisoners is a very flavorful inclusion, but it’s also a bulk uncommon that can be had for $0.13 right now. Again, it’s solid in Prosper decks for some extra cast-from-exile synergy, but something pricier like Passionate Archaeologist would’ve felt much better here.

One Last Hope

D&D Secret Lair Bonus Cards 2

If you can believe it, the value on the rest of the D&D Secret Lair bonus cards drops even lower. While players are certainly enjoying the artwork on the new Pride of the Perfect, from the Shadowheart’s Devotion drop, it’s not a very valuable card. Copies can be had for just $0.10 currently, and it barely sees play even in Commander Elf decks.

Bloody Betrayal, from Strahd’s Descent, and Dungeon Delver, from Black Lights & Dark Dungeons, mark the bottom of the barrel for these bonuses. Both are $0.05 cards and barely playable, to boot. While Betrayal has some utility in Blood decks like Anje, Maid of Dishonor, Dungeon Delver is pretty much hard-locked to Sefris of the Hidden Ways.

Overall, this is an incredibly weak bonus card lineup, which is sure to disappoint any Baldur’s Gate fans who bought in. That said, one glimmer of hope remains here. Since the Gale’s Ambition bonus card hasn’t been revealed, there’s still a chance for a valuable hit from this Superdrop. However, given what we’ve seen today, that may not be the best bet. Unless someone at Wizards really likes Gale, the bonus there will likely have a similar value proposition.
