Esports star and Twitch streamer Sean “Day9” Plott has recently streamed the Open Beta for Magic: Legends, the new free-to-play action role-playing game from Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios. After playing for three hours during his Twitch stream, Day9 decided to quit Magic: Legends, and shares his harsh take on the game’s system.

“It’s not that the game lacks interesting decisions, it lacks decisions,” Day9 said. “I hit my buttons on cool-down. I do not manage mana. There was no point in the first three hours that I managed mana, period. I really think that the current implementation of the deck and how that works in combat feels like an anti-system. It feels like it hurts the gameplay rather than creating something new and cool and fun.”

Day9 went on to say that he gives Magic: Legends “either a zero or a one” out of ten based on his gameplay experience.

Day9 – YouTube

It’s clearly not a great start for Magic: Legends with players expressing their complaints in the first few days since the Open Beta launched last week: problems with monetization as well as design and technical complaints. In the video, Day9 also compared the game to other popular ARPGs like Diablo 3 and Path of Exile, explaining how the combat and gameplay mechanics in those games are more fun than what he experienced in Magic: Legends. He said that the game’s unique component, which is the card-drawing mechanic of Magic: The Gathering, doesn’t work at all, and that he doesn’t sense a deep progression system like Path of Exile’s. Day9 also mentioned how a random enemy health bar suddenly ticked down in an overworld void of enemies, and he hears that the enemy “has been slain”. When a fan asked him about the loot system, Day9 said that he just found one tunic during his three-hour gameplay.
