Over the years, tons of cool, game-ending combos have been introduced to the world of MTG. Whether you’re dealing infinite damage or generating infinite mana, combos play a big role in a variety of formats.
What’s a bit unique, though, is to see an infinite combo mixed into a set’s Limited environment. This gives hope to players who open the requisite cards to actually pull off the unexpected.
While having access to an infinite combo in a Draft setting isn’t too common, there is one to keep in mind in MTG Foundations. You do need to open a specific mythic rare, but the other piece of the puzzle is an on-color common. This makes assembling the combo much more realistic if you open the mythic in pack one.
Sanguine Bond+Exquisite Blood… in Limited?
The MTG Foundations combo revolves around two cards: Bloodthirsty Conqueror and Marauding Blight-Priest. The way this combo works is quite similar to the Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond combination that has existed in Commander for years.
Once you have both Bloodthirsty Conqueror and Marauding Blight-Priest in play, all you need to do is deal damage to the opponent to cause a game-ending loop. Once you cause an opponent to lose life, Bloodthirsty Conqueror will cause you to gain that much life. From there, gaining life will trigger Marauding Blight-Priest, making each opponent lose 1 life.
Once again, this triggers Bloodthirsty Conqueror and so forth, allowing you to win the game on the spot. This combo really isn’t too difficult to pull off if you can find the pieces. After all, you just need to connect in combat with a single attacker, and Bloodthirsty Conqueror has evasion.
Alternatively, you could simply gain life, triggering Marauding Blight-Priest first and starting the chain. It’s cool to see an infinite combo in Limited that is this simple, though it’s not the first time combos have made their presences felt in Draft.
Other Intriguing Limited Combos
Beyond MTG Foundations, there are a few other Limited environments that come to mind when thinking about combos. For example, Felidar Guardian and Saheeli Rai were both able to be drafted in Aether Revolt Limited.
Even though Felidar Guardian was from Kaladesh, not Aether Revolt, these sets were part of the same block. As such, you opened packs from both sets while Drafting. This combo lets you generate infinite Hasty attackers. Meanwhile, Modern Masters featured both Pestermite and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, enabling a very similar combo.
Another sweet combo involves Calamity, Galloping Inferno and Terror of the Peaks. While not infinite, these cards usually end the game when paired together. You just need to saddle up Calamity with Terror and attack with Calamity. You’ll get two copies of Terror, which when combined with the Terror already in play, will allow you to conveniently deal 20 damage to the opponent.
The fact that the MTG Foundations combo requires opening only one rare/mythic rare slot and both combo cards match colors makes it one of the most reliable combos we’ve seen in Limited in many years. We look forward to seeing who gets fortunate enough to set this up in the coming weeks.
