In news that will come as no surprise enterprising Magic players have already discovered a number of broken combos utilizing new Bloomburrow cards. As a result, we’re seeing some early secondary market price spikes from the set. Stormsplitter is up by over 200%, which is impressive. Not nearly as impressive as Innkeeper’s Talent, however, which has shot up by 700%. It’s early days, of course, with the set only releasing physically today. But if these Bloomburrow combo spikes are anything to go by, these two could be some of the chase cards of the set.
Stormsplitter (+208%)
Just a week ago, Stormsplitter was sitting at around $2.50. A reasonable price, especially for a brand-new mythic rare. Today, you’re looking at around $7.80 for a copy of this combolicious Otter. Why exactly is this? Well, thanks to early brewing and playtesting, of course. Players like yoman_5 on Twitter have quickly cottoned on to the card’s potential in Insidious Roots decks in Standard. Here, it can provide a board full of hasty mana dorks to fuel all manner of shenanigans.
Outside of that, the card is also a very popular new Commander pick. EDHRec shows over 1300 decks with the card already, and not just Otter decks either. Plenty of Izzet Spellslinger brews are including this furry friend too. Commander is a huge driver for a card’s price in the current climate, so it’s not surprising to see this early interest rewarded with a sizable spike.
This is a great starting point for the card, but its potential in older formats is yet to be explored. Many immediately thought of Modern Ruby Storm when this card was previewed, and it could well find a home there. It’s very unconventional as Storm finishers go, needing to be in play before you go off, unlike Grapeshot or Empty the Warrens. That said, it definitely has potential, and that alone makes it a very exciting prospect.
I can easily see Stormsplitter hitting $10 in the next few days, and stabilizing around there for the time being. Once tournament results start coming in, that could go even higher, but don’t expect it to hit bulk mythic prices again. I think the genie’s out of the bottle on this one.
Innkeeper’s Talent (+700%)
The second of our Bloomburrow combo spikes for today is Innkeeper’s Talent. This one has been getting a lot of love on social media over the past couple of days. As we covered yesterday, LevDev discovered a brutal OTK combo with the card and Vraska, Betrayal’s Sting, which is legal in Standard and can end games on turn six. Whether this is a meme or a new meta force remains to be seen, but it’s certainly stirring the price up in the meantime.
Innkeeper’s Talent has shot up from around $1.50 last week to over $12 this week, representing an increase of around 700%. The combo almost certainly has something to do with this sudden, massive increase, but this is also just a card many had their eye on as a solid Midrange piece. In its basic, unleveled form, Innkeeper’s Talent bears a striking resemblance to ex-Standard all-star Luminarch Aspirant. It may not be a creature itself, but that just makes it more resilient. Its middle ability is also excellent for fair decks, making them much trickier to interact with.
Basically, Innkeeper’s Talent is a combo piece that can also play well outside of combos. That kind of versatility inevitably leads to a lot of demand from different archetypes, and therefore a high price tag. Just how high are we talking? I could see $20 as a ceiling. It’s a great card, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also a rare in one of the most-hyped, and sure to be most-opened, Magic sets in years. Unless the combo really takes off, or Golgari Midrange starts adopting it en masse, $10 sounds like a more reasonable resting place for this card long-term.
