Slivers are one of the most dreaded typal decks to face down in a game of Commander. Because Slivers tend to snowball in power the more you have in play, it doesn’t take long for the seemingly innocent little 1/1s to get out of hand. Throw in the incredible five-color Commanders Slivers have in their arsenal, and building up a board of deadly effects becomes trivial.
Thanks to the new Edge of Eternities Sliver support card Thrumming Hivepool, all kinds of MTG players are dusting off their Sliver decks, or building one anew. For those looking to navigate the world of Slivers for the first time, here are the best Sliver cards in MTG Commander.
Sliver Legion
Trying to get away from all your Slivers being piddly little 1/1s? Sliver Legion is the card you’re looking for. Slivers want to stockpile on board, buffing one another with various effects. Since you want a ton of Slivers in play anyway, Sliver Legion functions as the ultimate typal anthem. Your ultimate goal is to just jam a ton of Slivers, so you may as well make them gigantic.
That said, that’s all Sliver Legion is really capable of. The five-colored identity isn’t a downside either, since this archetype really wants to be in every color. Just don’t use Sliver Legion as your Commander when you have so many better options.
Sliver Gravemother
The face Commander from the recent Commander Masters Sliver Legion precon, Sliver Gravemother is built with Commander Slivers in mind. These creatures are fantastic at flooding the board with Slivers that scale, but like most creature decks in Commander, board wipes can be difficult to recover from. Sliver Gravemother helps this particular issue by giving all of your Slivers Encore.
In addition to getting even more, albeit temporary, bodies than when your Slivers were removed, Sliver Gravemother ignores Legend Rule. This allows you to do some truly heinous things with the various five-colored Sliver Legends. Imagine Cascading three times per spell with The First Sliver.
Hatchery Sliver
Similar to Sliver Gravemother, Hatchery Sliver can help you rebuild after you lose your board. Hatchery Sliver lets your Slivers scale in effectiveness with your mana by giving them all Replicate.
This can turn situations where you’re topdecking just a few unimpressive two drops into a surprisingly impressive board. Just get a few of the right Slivers, and you can still make big plays happen on low amounts of cards, but high mana.
Cloudshredder Sliver
Cloudshredder Sliver is your win condition. Granting all Slivers Haste and Flying means that even moderately sized boards can start taking out opponents. With a modest mana value of two, it’s very easy to follow up Cloudshredder Sliver with a bunch of muscle, and swing out at a player all at once. The best removal in Commander is player removal.
Synapse Sliver
Synapse Sliver offers what some of the most powerful generic typal support offers. Connecting with your Slivers now turns into card draw. This basically makes Synapse Sliver a Kindred Discovery specifically for Slivers, but since it’s a creature, Synapse Sliver also benefits from all the other buffs that your Slivers grant.
Notably, Synapse Sliver does not allow all Slivers to gain its abilities. This could get out of hand extremely quickly, potentially causing a Sliver EDH player to draw their entire deck and lose. Of course, Synapse Sliver’s ability is also powerful enough that giving it to all your Slivers might be a little too good.
Harmonic Sliver
Harmonic Sliver is a Game Changer attached to a body. This card basically functions as a typal Aura Shards for Slivers. Game Changers are considered the most powerful cards in Commander, so having a typal payoff lookalike basically solidifies it as a must-include in any Sliver deck.
Artifacts and enchantments are not only incredibly common in Commander, but can be difficult to remove. With Harmonic Sliver in play, your opponents will have a hard time keeping anything on the board. Even if your Slivers get wiped, you already took a ton of cards with them.
Sliver Overlord
Sliver Overlord isn’t the best Commander for the archetype out there, but it is a typal Commander that most creature types would kill for. Being able to tutor any Sliver out of your deck is incredibly powerful, answering any threat that your opponents may present. The second ability isn’t too useful, but some creature type shenanigans can let you take your opponent’s creatures if you build around this card as your Commander.
Sliver Overlord can always find the best answer, and basically makes it so you always have something to do, provided you have the mana. The only real downside of the card is how expensive it is. This is $50 to grab but on the plus side, it is seeing a reprint in Edge of Eternities. That reprint is a Special Guest; however, so this won’t be an easy card to obtain. Still, if you want to build the best Sliver deck possible, Sliver Overlord is a must, even in the 99.
The First Sliver
This is not only the best Sliver Commander, but the best Sliver in all of Magic: The Gathering. Granting Slivers Cascade creates lethal boards out of nowhere, and can do so extremely quickly. You can easily end games on the turn you resolve The First Sliver with a little setup.
This is a Food Chain cEDH Commander for good reason. Combine The First Sliver with Morophon, the Boundless, and you can cast a disturbing amount of spells in the same turn. While this is easily the most powerful Sliver deck you can build, do know that most Commander players will take The First Sliver very seriously as a Commander, so get ready to be public enemy number one. That said, that’s generally the case with any Sliver Commander.
